This cache will give you some of the best views along the
Mississippi river valley. Barn Bluff is essentially Red Wing's
largest landmark, and this cache will take you across it.
It is very important that you park and start at the correct
location. Park at N 44º 34.078' W092º 31.161'. This is the most
safe and legal way to enter the park.
Read the plaques and signs on your way up to learn about the
history of the bluff and the Kiwanis Stairway. This information
will be poignant once you reach the cache area.
I recommend taking the south trail to the cache. It's clearly
marked and you will find a map near the parking point at the top of
the stairs. Your hike will be almost exactly 1km/0.6miles. From the
cache location, you may choose to take the same way back, or if you
are adventurous and have more time you can take the north trail.
Please note that this trail is many times closed during
unseasonable months. Obey and respect all posted signs.
Keep in mind the terrain rating for this cache. Even though the
trail to the cache area is safe for all ages and most abilities,
getting to the actual cache takes care. Finding this cache, like
all caches, is at your own risk. No bushwacking is required.
Container is a small ammo box donated by Towlebooth and
Jillibean. Thanks to them for helping me maintain this cache!
This cache was voted Cache
of the Month, April 2004 by the Minnesota Geocaching Assoication.
Due to the danger of snow and ice, this cache is not available
in the winter. There have been some accidents in this area during
the winter so it will be temporarily disabled during unsafe times.
This cache will also respect any time that Red Wing decides to
close the trails. If you find that the trails to the cache are
closed, please let me know so I can temporarily disable the
cache.
Please take photos of your trip and post them to your log! Have
fun, enjoy the view, and experience this great bluff in
Minnesota.
