Geocache Description:

Hawks Beak is Located in Hawks Nest State Park

The cache is hidden along the Cliffside Trail. The trail head can be picked up in a couple different locations. Take your pick. You will not be disappointed with the vistas.

The trail is well worn and well traveled. Be cautious if hiking with small children. One misstep on the trail could be tragic. The complete hike from overlook to lodge is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Take a flashlight and explore the little caves along the way.

The cache sits overlooking Hawks Nest Lake. The lake was formed in 1934 when the New River was diverted through a 3.2 mile long tunnel drilled through Gauley Mountain which consisted of high grade silicon ore.

The tunnel is 46 feet in diameter and has a tragic past. During its construction many lives were lost. Typical construction injuries were not unusual for the times. The real problem arose from silicon dust which caused silicosis. Out of the 5000 workers employed during the 2 yrs of construction it is estimated that the death toll ranged from 100 to 1500. Good luck finding this one and be careful not to become 1501. :)
