This cache is on the Kaniere Water-race Walkway about 19km east of Hokitika. The whole walk takes 3 hours 30 minutes, but, because we were getting short of time before the sun set, we walked in for only about 10 minutes. The walkway follows the twists and turns of the historic water race as it passes along the edge of the scenic reserve. It starts at The Landing at the northern edge of Lake Kaniere and ends at the Kennedy Creek Road. There are other entrance and exit points.
The track starts at S 42 47.909 E 171 08.331 directly behind the large sign on the edge of the road. You can park over the road at S 42 47.923 E 171 08.350. This is right by the intake to the water race.
As you walk in make sure you notice the tunnelling right by the entrance, the effect of the current on the tree roots on the sides of the race, and the aqueduct at S 42 47.772 E 171 08.345 that takes the water across the creek. If you have plenty of time you might like to complete some, or all, of the walk.
The cache is 450 metres North of the starting point. Satellite coverage is spasmodic along the track but is OK around the cache site. Two horizontal beams across the water race mark the spot. The cache is on the lower or river side of the walking track, opposite the beams. You can get to it by leaving the track for a step or two, unless you have long arms! It could be advisable for someone to keep watch for you while you do this.
The cache is now a one litre clear snap-like type container with the words Official Geocache written in black on the lid.
