Geocache Description:

The Mausoleum is within the grounds of St Andrew’s Church, Shotley and is accessible via a public footpath from the main road, the name Shotley is thought to mean ‘leah’ (open space in a wood).

To get the coordinates for the cache you must first locate the head stone of John Bell, you should have no problem as its the only one of its kind in the graveyard, then complete the following to find the missing numbers:

Multiply Hannah’s age by Elizabeth’s age:
Then add to this Hannah’s and Joseph’s age’s:
Then deduct the father John’s age:
N54° 53.

Multiply the father John’s age by his son John’s age:
Then add to this his son Joseph’s age:
Then deduct his daughter Eliza’s age:
W001° 55.

Hopefully you now have the coordinates for the cache which is a clip lock box container, its not too far away but outside of the church grounds.

There are marvellous views from the mausoleum as it is situated on the summit of Grey Mare Hill, 960ft (292.6m) above sea level, just to the east of the A68 road between Riding Mill and Castleside and 2½ miles (4km) from Whittonstall (parking area on the left as you turn off the A68). The elaborate domed mausoleum was built by Humphrey Hopper of Black Hedley in 1752 in memory of his wife Jane Hodgson, the Hoppers came from Scotland and the inscription records the presence of Nicholas Hopper here in 1573.
