Geocache Description:

Explore an old, dry, hidden, root cellar. It is constructed with hand cut blocks of yellow sandstone and has a curved, self-supporting ceiling. It was made long before there was a thought of making Yellowstone Lake State Park in Southern Wisconsin.

Generated by The Selector

The state of Wisconsin purchased farmsteads in the area to make Yellowstone Lake and Yellowstone State Park. In the interest of safety, the homesteds were torn down. Because of the construction of this root cellar, it escaped demolition. Homesteaders kept vegetables grown during the summer in root cellars for the winter months. The root cellar of this homestead is located in a hillside. It is covered with dirt. Over time, weeds and trees have hidden the top of the root cellar.

Parking is located in a small lot on public access land. The public, one-lane car path goes along private property for a short ways. The coordinates for parking are N42 45.765 W90 00.276. The cache can be reached by following a snow mobile path. The path is covered with grass during the summer.

You do not have to bushwhack to find this cache. The path, which loops around from behind to in front of the cellar, will take you to about 10 feet from the cache location. So you need to be able to see the entrance of the root cellar to your right from the path before you leave the trail. You are looking for a small camo'ed tupperware container.
