The first of a series of caches around Newport (Casnewydd) easy cache close to the mouth of the River Usk, short walk through the Gwent Levels Wetland Reserve
This cache is the first of several I hope to place at significant locations around Newport. The cache is close to the mouth of the River Usk, which joins the Severn here, and then flows through the heart of Newport.
To get to the cache, you need to walk through the Gwent Levels Wetland Reserve, plenty of birds to watch along the way. Car park is at N 51 32.767' W002 57.652', although this closes at 5pm according to the sign. (I see no problem with park along the road after this time)
The Nature Reserve is overshadowed by the now disused Uskmouth power station, which gives an interesting contrast of industry versus nature. Good views across the Severn to Flatholme Island and the English coast, and across the Usk to the old lighthouse make the trip well worth while.
The path to the cache is fairly straightforward, stick to the gravel paths, observe the deep water warning signs, keep away from the giant hogweed and you'll be ok!
The cache is in a medium sized plastic tub with a blue lid, but its wrapped in a black bin liner to make it less obvious. It contains several small cuddly animals, a pair of rubber gloves, a lanyard, post it notes, various pens, felt tips and a mouse trap .....
