Spectacle Island - Kayak Cache #1 Letterbox Hybrid

This cache has been archived.

Cool Librarian: This one, unfortunately, has to be archived.
When I placed the cache, I was unaware that the owner minded kayakers on the island, as I see them pulled up there every time I go past in summer (which is about everyday). But I have since been contacted by the owner, and due to vandalism on the island (due to partying teens, not geocachers), he has decided to place signs and discourage visitors.

I will remove the cache as soon as I get the boat in the cove. However, if someone who has not already claimed a find would like to get a smiley and grab the cache for me, please contact me through my profile.

Thanks to all who visited and to those who HAULED TRASH OFF THE ISLAND during the CITO. Peace.

Geocache Description:

This cache is on Spectacle Island in Portsmouth, RI. It's an easy kayak paddle, and could also be accessed by other boat transportation. The water is somewhat shallow, so the boat cannot be too large. You could also swim to it, but only if you are a strong swimmer - please use caution and common sense.

The terrain rating is 4 stars because you need a boat (kayak, canoe, or small powerboat) to access the cache, or must be a strong swimmer. At the site, the terrain is 1.5 with some possibly steep terrain, depending on which trail you take in. There is a cool "homestead" on the island - it doesn't look to be in use yet this year, but please be courteous if you encounter people using it. This is a pretty classic hide, and not too difficult (accuracy was about 25 feet), so no hints for now.

This island is a popular resting spot for kayakers, and the swimming is nice off the island - warm, clean water, fairly gradual drop-off. There is plenty to see in the cove, and the area makes for a great day of paddling, swimming, and clamming.

The entrance to the cove is off of route 24 North, and is the same parking for the BLUEBELL cache.

This cache also contains a stamp and ink pad, so if you letterbox, please bring your stamp and stamp into the logbook. Have Fun!
