Geocache Description:

This "park and grab" cache is located on city property. It is handicap accessible. Your GPS will have a limited view of the sky in this area. It will get you close and then you will have to use your geo instincts. Cache contains a log and pencil. Although this cache container is big enough for small trade items, please do NOT place items inside this cache. Thanks! You may see spiders at the cache hiding spot, but you should not have any trouble at all with snakes.

The Tauhindauli (Wintu Clan) settled on the Sacramento River at the location that would later become known as Upper Soda Springs. The Upper Soda Springs Resort was located at this location. The resort was started in the mid 1850's by Ross McCloud and Mary Campbell McCloud. The main California-Oregon stagecoach road passed right in front of their resort. In the 1880's, the railroad was built parallel to Ross's road, with a stop for Upper Soda.

The next 30 years were the height of Upper Soda Springs, as fashionable people from the San Francisco Bay Area, and elsewhere, came for the summer, to enjoy the mineral spring water, the beautiful surroundings, and the hunting and fishing. The resort did not survive the 1920's. By the 1940's, almost all the old buildings were torn down. If you explore the area you will find the mineral spring across the road. You will also find evidence of the old buildings.

During my childhood, the river between the two bridges was an undeveloped swimming/fishing hole popular with the locals.

On July 14, 1991, a Southern Pacific train derailed upstream from Dunsmuir. A chemical tank car fell into the river and ruptured. The tank car released 19,000 gallons of herbicide into the river killing virtually all aquatic life between Cantara Loop and Shasta Lake. Southern Pacific paid approximately $14 million in settlement for the damages caused by this spill. The river has since recovered and offers good fishing.

This new park is being built with a small portion of the settlement money. This park will include handicap fishing access, paved trails and parking areas, toilets, and a picnic area. This park is only a few minutes from I-5. It has a nice picnic area, fishing area, and swimming area during the summer months. It is dog and kid friendly.

The cache container is relatively new to the area. This cache container is slightly larger than the traditional micro, and smaller than the regular size. Please do Not leave trade items inside the cache. The cache is "Attached" and should be returned to the same position. Please remove and replace with care.

This is the first cache that we have placed. It has been in place for over 5 years and over 200 visitors! Enjoy the area.
