Hrad, který byl východiskem a základnou skvelého vzestupu mocného rodu pánu z Pernštejna, vznikl v polovine 13. století a byl prebudován a rozširován až do poloviny 16. století.
Puvodní jednoduchá bergfritová dispozice se tak ztrácí ve spleti pozdejších prístaveb, které pusobí velmi malebným a zároven monumentálním dojmem. Tato pozdne gotická a rane renesancní podoba hradu nebyla dotcena pozdejšími prestavbami a je ojedinelým dokladem organických premen stredoveké pevnosti na luxusnejší renesancní reprezentativní sídlo, neztrácející nic na obranyschopnosti.

The Pernstejn castle from railway station Nedvedice

The castle of Pernštejn, designed in the middle of the 13th century to be absolutely impenetrable, was in fact never conquered.
Extensions and modifications continued through the middle of the 16th century. Today Pernštejn transmits the character of a medieval fortress transformed into a more luxurious Renaissance residence, but visitors (who ought to be in reasonably good physical condition) can observe the transition all the way from the Gothic period, through the Renaissance and the Baroque, Rococo and Classic styles, right down to the Romantic style of the 19th century. The different periods are reflected in the different styles of the furniture.
