Geocache Description:

PA 233 (S. of I 81 or N. of U.S. 30) to Michaux Rd. Follow Michaux Rd. to Bunker Hill Rd. Park along Bunker Hill Road. The main gate to Camp Michaux is directly opposite. The terrain and difficulty figured are averages. The caches can be found with relative ease: there is only light brush. However, the cacher who chooses to explore the other landmarks will encounter much steeper terrain, brambles, mud, etc.

This is an offset cache. Part one is in a black-taped pill bottle and contains the directions to the main cache. Be advised that signals in the area are sometimes weak and often erratic, so be prepared to expand your search a bit. Coordinates for Part 1 should land you within 20'(suggestions for tighter numbers are welcome - see the hint). The main cache is in a medium sized Lock-and-Lock box. Also, be warned that the occasional buzz muggle (timber rattler) pokes its head into the goings-on and once was observed to be guarding the cache.

...............................................................................................................................................................................................................PLEASE REHIDE EXACTLY AS FOUND. CURIOUS MUGGLES FREQUENT THE AREA AND DISCOVERY IS CERTAIN IF THE CONTAINER IS NOT COMPLETELY COVERED WHEN REHIDDEN.

Originally the Bunker Hill Farm owned by the Gardner family, Camp Michaux later functioned as a CCC camp and a WWII POW camp where the inventer of the German buzz bomb was reputed to be held. In 1947, the compound was converted for use as a church camp and conference center. It last saw service in 1972. The buildings were auctioned and razed circa 1973-4. For anyone who would like to play archeologist, this is a great place to snoop around and try to reconstruct the camp from the remaining clues (tree rows, foundation blocks, well covers, etc.). With the help of many volunteers under guidance of the PA Bureau of Forestry and the Cumberland Valley Historical Society, the area is gradually being brushed out and landmarks are being exposed. There are posts for a self-guided walking tour throughout the camp. A brochure is available at Pine Grove Furnace State Park. You may also borrow a list of stops from the cache. For the biologist, the camp offers a fantastic example of ecological succession and forest recovery in action.

Note that the album in the cache container IS NOT swag and should remain with the cache for the enjoyment of future geocachers and explorers.

FTF honors to fzyo0001. Congrats.

My thanks to ThePropers for the many photos, the waypoints and their general interest in the site and the cache! A shout-out also to Lee Schaeffer for his input. More recently (Feb. 2017), Aaron and Noah: my gratitude for rescuing the cache from the fountain and replacing the log book.
