How Geocaching Works
Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions in our disclaimer
Easy multi-cache in the Gardens of Schönbrunn which are at the list of world heritages together with the Castle of Schönbrunn.
Details about the area can be found at:
(site in german, english and italian).
You can reach the cache area by public transport (U4 till "Hietzing"). Those coming by car can use the parking area not far from the front of the castle (parking fee).
During night the park is closed. Therefore have a look at the opening hours at the gate! The trail is most of it`s length a gravel walk. No special equipment is needed, a pocket lamp could be useful. Dogs are not allowed at the whole area. Length: short walk, no difference in height.
NB: The above difficulty and terrain rating was done with the rating program from geocaching.com. To be internationally comparable I´m using this result. (See the discussion in the forum also.)
Stage 1: The old greenhouse
N1 = 48° 11.050´
E1 = 016° 18.202´
Count all the lightning rods on the building which are adorned with a flag. The result is A.
Stage 2: Where are you now?
N2 = 48° 10.950´
E2 = 016° 18.602´
You are standing now in front of
- the eldest Zoo of the world, then B = 450
- a public toilet, then B = 482
- a souvenir shop, then B = 511
- a labyrinth/maze, then B = 543
- a fountain, then B = 600
- a hot dog booth, then B = 663
Stage 3: The bird cage
N3 = 48° 10.914´
E3 = 016° 18.745´
Which big digit or letter do you see at the floor of the cage? If it's a digit, take this digit as C. If it's a letter convert it into a number (a=1, b=2,...z=26) and call it C. (The same letter or digit you can see in a small and single version on the grate/grid.)
Stage 4: The beautiful fountain
N4 = 48° 10.870´
E4 = 016° 18.842´
This was the main stage of the multi. This well gave the castle it's name (Schönbrunn = beautiful fountain). After renovation the plate with details of the building is missing. I mention this stage only for touristical purposes. Proceed for the cache with stage 4a.
Stage 4a: The roman ruin
N5 = 48° 10.855´
E5 = 016° 18.823´
When was the roman ruin errected? Subtract 138 from the year. The result is D.
Stage 5: The obelisk fountain
N5 = 48° 10.835´
E5 = 016° 18.947´
How many turtles are under the obelisk? The result is E. How many heads does the eagle on top of the obelisk have? The result is F.
Stage 6: The Cache
Now you should be ready to calculate the final stage.
N6 = 48° 10.Y´ where Y = A * C * E + B + 9
E6 = 016° 18.X´ where X = 4 * A + 6 * C * F + D / 2 - 1
The cache (a jam glass) is hidden in a hollow tree stump. Please hide it carefully afterwards!
After you've found this cache please rate it at GCVote!
The average rating of this cache is stars of five. (One star is bad, 5 stars are excellent)
