Geocache Description:

This cache (a green ammo box) is not far from the trail in this great hiking preserve. Bring a snack or lunch to have while you enjoy the view at the end of the trail. It is a 2.2 mile hike from the trailhead. The trail is very well maintained and makes for easy hiking.

Please note: The preserve is closed December through March, so this cache should be considered unavailable during those months.

The "Mianus River Gorge Wildlife Refuge and Botanical Preserve" is in Bedford, NY and is owned by the Nature Conservancy. It is open 8:30am-5:00pm April 1 - December 1. Heed the closing time - they lock the gates to the parking lot at 5:00!

The parking lot is on Mianus River Road at N41 11.170 W073 37.308

Admission is free. Trail maps are available at the trailhead parking lot. If you enjoy the trails and trail map, consider making a small donation in the donation box to help maintain the preserve.

Note: All the trails pretty much lead to the same place in the end, so don't worry about whether you are on the red trail or the blue trail. As long as you're headed in the right direction, it doesn't matter which one you take!

Preserve rules:
No dogs
No mountain bikes
The preserve is closed December through March.
No camping, littering, picnics or fires

Info about the preserve is at (visit link)

Did you know this is the "birthplace" of The Nature Conservancy? I found the following background info at (visit link) :

The Nature Conservancy now owns and manages more than 150 preserves throughout New York. Mianus River Gorge, scarcely more than an hour's drive north of New York City, is the "birthplace" of the Conservancy's method of direct-action conservation. This was the first project the fledgling Conservancy became involved in when a group of local citizens came together to protect the gorge. Formed in 1953, the Mianus River Gorge Conservation Committee fostered the pioneer land preservation project of the Conservancy, and over 50 transactions have since added to the preserve's size.

The Mianus River Gorge was registered as a National Natural Historic Landmark in 1964, the first natural area to be so designated.
