Fall is upon us and it is time for the second annual Hike N Seek
Please watch this page for updates as details will be posted here as they become available.
This years event will be Saturday, October 1st at Briggs Woods Park (a Hamilton County Park) about 2 miles south of Webster City, Iowa.
The updated coordinates are for the campground and shelter #1 where we'll meet for registration and all activities. Look for signs leading to the event shelter and available parking.
Event organizers will be camping in the park for the weekend and will be able to claim additional sites when we get there. If you would like us to grab you a site, let us know. You do not have to camp in the park to participate in the event. Webster City hotels are only a few miles from the park and they include: AmericInn 515-832-3999 and Super8 515-832-2000.
We are planning to have all of the cache data available in both printed and electronic format. There will be computers available for downloading both waypoints and cache descriptions. There will be cables available for whatever GPS and PDAs we can arrange, but bring your own just to be sure.
For those who dont have their own GPS, or only have one for the team, we may have some units on loan from various sources. These will be available on a first come, first served basis so get there early if you want to use one.
If you have FRS radios, bring them along so you can communicate with (or taunt) the other participants . Tune to channel 12, sub channel 0. We will have the FRS repeater running if we find that it improves reception.
Friday Night, September 30
We'll plan an informal campfire gathering and probably a night cache (using reflectors and flashlights) for anyone who shows up.
Most county parks close at 10:30 PM so anyone not camping should plan to leave by that time.
Saturday Morning, October 1
Things will get going around 9:00 on Saturday morning. We'll have an area setup for you to get the cache list and load your GPS/PDA if necessary. After you get the cache list, you are on your own. Hunt the caches, or hang out in camp and shoot the breeze with who ever is there.
Saturday Afternoon, October 1
The updated, but still flexible, plan for wrap-up activities is a follows:
- 4:15 Lay the prize items out on a designated table for viewing.
- 4:25 Get the grills started.
- 4:30 Group photo. Everybody in the photo gets a prize drawing ticket as they line up.
- 4:45 Start cooking.
- 4:45 Announcements (anybody pass a milestone?, upcoming events, etc.) and prize drawing.
- 5:00 Potluck
We'll have some cook fires going a little in advance of the potluck and we should have some refrigerator or cooler space to keep things cool during the day if that's necessary.
For the potluck, bring your own meat, beverages and table settings. We'll have extra settings on-hand just in case and we'll probably have any condiments you need also. Please bring a dish to share based on the first letter of your last name:
If anyone wants to donate some bottled water, soda, ice or charcoal for the event, that would be great.
- Last name A-H: dessert
- Last name I-P: salad, fruit, and/or vegetables
- Last name Q-Z: chips, pretzels, and/or snacks
Saturday Night, October 1
Another informal campfire gathering and probably another night cache to wrap things up.
|NOTE: Event day is also the opening day of bow hunting season; however, hunting is NOT permitted in Briggs Woods so we should be safe in that regard. Even so, wear safety orange clothing if you have some and be extra careful out there.
