Owyhee Homestead Series
Dedicated to the pioneers who first settled this area.
The Ghost Ranch is so named because many believed it is haunted by Sally Thomas. In the late 1800's, Sally, a former "hurdy-gurdy girl" lived at the ranch with her husband, Richard Thomas. Their marriage was less than ideal. There was more than one report of Sally plotting to kill her husband. In 1896, Sally's brother-in-law tried to borrow a gun in order to kill Richard. In another instance, Sally herself borrowed strychnine to poison Richard. However her plan was thwarted by Richard's refusal to eat until Sally did so herself.
Finally later that year both Sally and Richard suddenly and mysteriously disappeared. A visiting neighbor stopped by to visit, found the stove warm, uneaten food on the table, and absolutely no sign of the couple. All of their belongings were still in the house. Horses and saddles were still in the barn. But the couple was never seen or heard from again.
Eventually two years later, a human skull was discovered in the area by a local sheepherder. The skull was never positively identified. However, it was shortly after the discovery of the skull that the ghost of Sally Thomas was first sighted. There were several reports of her wailing on dark, stormy, windy nights. In a few instances, she was described as a lonely soul and was credited with helping passing travelers.
