Næsholm is one of Denmarks best investigated ruins. It assumes to be residence for a bailiff or nobility from about 1300. It was the Danish King Valdemar the 2, who had the need for controlling the herring fishery (read tax) landed in Nykøbing, that's why he managed to build a residence for a administrator here. Næsholm was situated on an island or islet, where there was access to the see. The thick walls of the castle give the cause for believing for the necessity for protection to unrest and civil war, amongst others plundering in the vicinity by Marsk Stig. Later excavations have found chained skeletons in the basements of the castle.

The two neighbouring castles Borren and Nygård were build in the same period. Borren a little bit before and Nygård a little bit later. The remains of Borren can be seen today at Højby Sø. The name of Nygård is today Drøsselhom, and is situated a little bit north of Næsholm. It is told in the legends that Queen Margrethe the 1 are conceived here.
