Spy Rock Geocache Traditional Geocache
Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions in our disclaimer
The Spy Rock Geocache is another in a series of caches hidden along the section of the Appalachian Trail maintained by the Natural Bridge Appalachian Trail Club (for more information on club activites, check out www.nbatc.org). THE NBATC DOES NOT SANCTION OR DO ANY MAINTAINING OF THIS GEOCACHE!
To get there, take the Blue Ridge Parkway to milepost 27.1 and exit onto Route 56. After about a mile and a half, turn right into the fish hatchery. Alternately, take Hwy 29 N past Amherst and turn left onto Route 151. Then turn left on Route 56 after 11 miles and go about 15 miles to the fish hatchery (passing by two geocaches along the way). At the fish hatchery, follow the signs to the parking area. Hike up the gravel road for a mile to the AT junction and go left. After one half mile, you will see a campsite and a sign pointing to the right for Spy Rock. When you reach the outcrop, the trail to the right is probably the quickest and easiest ascent. Take in the magnificent view as you search for the cache. Across from the way you came up is Maintop Mountain. Moving clockwise, the next peak is the highest: The Priest. Directly behind you is Rocky Mountain (with the towers) and Mount Pleasant, Pompey Mountain The Cardinal, and The Friar to the left.
Have fun but be careful crawling up and down those rocks! Please replace cache in the same spot and replace foliage in front of it. Muggles wander all over those rocks and might find it if not well hidden.
