Geocache Description:

Piscatawaytown Burial Ground is old and was neglected until recently, the area has toppled Grave Stones, sunken Graves and chuck holes so watch your footing or you may end up with one foot in the Grave.

The Piscatawaytown Burial Ground surrounds St. James Episcopal Church, the original structure was built in 1724, in 1835 it was destroyed by a tornado. It was rebuilt using much of the original wood and fixtures as possible. There is a legend about that tornado that Thomas Harper was standing out in the great storm of 1835 and when advised by someone to enter the inn which then stood opposite the church he uttered the most profane oaths declaring he would not fear God until he felt his power was instantly struck with a piece of timber from the falling church and died four days afterward. No story about the Piscatawaytown Burial Ground would be complete without mention of Mary Moore, the alleged witch. Evidence exists that Moore was buried in the cemetery, including a listing of her grave in Dr. Ezra M. Hunt’s “Record of Burials ( in the Piscatawaytown Grave Yard as of October 28, 1880.” Folk legend has it that Moore’s behavior led to an accusation of witchcraft during Colonial times. The truth remains unknown, although tales about dire happenings around her grave persist. The Graveyard holds War Heroes from every War from the Revolutionary War to Desert Storm, the highest-ranking veteran laid to rest here is Brevet Major General Thomas Swords who fought in the Civil War. The ownership of the Graveyard was turned over to Edison Township in 1961, so this Graveyard is public property surrounding the Church. The name “Wait”…..don’t eat the mushrooms!
