THE DESCENT Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

Simply Paul: My thanks to the Sandpipers for picking this up for me. I'm sad to see it go too, but the time is right. Thanks to everyone who came to have a go at finding this one; I hope you enjoyed the area. Surprised more people didn't say the recognised the hut from the movie, but perhaps it's not as well known as I thought.

Geocache Description:

The 2005 film 'The Descent' was mostly shot in a studio as the bigger part of the action takes place underground in fake caves. However, two scenes were shot near Berkhamsted. The 'spooky cabin in the woods' and the 'cave entrance' sections were both filmed here. MICRO - PLEASE BRING YOUR OWN PEN. (Plus torch, flares, climbing equipment, birthday cake...)

Try not to end up looking like this, if you can.
Fans of the film will recognise this shot.

The good news is this cache, unlike the film, does NOT require you to spelunk a mile underground or be eaten by subterranean monsters. However, the good folk of Ashridge may have other plans for you... Once you've found the micro, take a look at the large fallen tree by the path above the cabin. It was used as the entrance to the cave - which was added digitally. The movie should NOT to be confused with 'The Cave' which was a dodgy American film made and released around the same time. The two films have very similar storylines. The Descent was directed by Neil Marshall, who also made the cult 'Dog Soldiers'.

Good luck, and please look out for white vans on the way here (if you've seen the film, you'll know what I mean!)
