Geocache Description:

ENGLISH
This is a drive in cache.
The Cache is placed next to the memorial stone on highway 1 (39,8 km mark) South of Roskilde.
The memorial is a witness of one of the darkest chapters of the Nazi occupation of Denmark from 1940-1945. You can park next to the memorial, but beware of the intense traffic. If you open the spoiler picture, you don’t need your GPS.
The story behind the memorial:
In the night of August 8 1944 eleven Danish Freedom fighters was executed by the GESTAPO (contraction of Geheime Staatspolizei: “secret state police”). GESTAPO was the official secret police of Nazi Germany.
The “official NAZI announcement was; “Shot under attempted escape” but the true story was revealed after the war.
The 11 Danish Freedom fighters was collected from their prison cells in Copenhagen in the evening of august 7 1944. They were transported on highway 1 towards Roskilde. When they reached the outskirts of Roskilde, the truck pulled over and the prisoners was ordered out of the truck. All 11 Freedom fighters was shot in blank range and was left in the cornfield.
First several days after the German occupation force announced the “escape attempt”
The 11 Freedom fighters were from the to major resisteance groups called “BOPA” and “Holger Danske” (The Viking Holger Danske is still slumbering in the dark casemates under the castle Kronborg in Helsingør. According to legend he will wake up the moment Denmark is threatened by external enemies.)
The two resistance groups’ speciality were to sabotage “German-friendly” companies and railroads in Denmark.
By the way; the date marked on the memorial is wrong. The date should be august 8 1944, not august 9 1944.
On the memorial the text is in Danish says: “Lawless were killed eleven danish men, the faitfull sons of the homeland.” On the backside of the memorial the text in Danish says: “Here they wrote their names with blood into the Danish people’s hearts and mind.
If you study the names and birthdates on the memorial, you wil discover that the youngest wictim was only 20 years old, the eldest was 23.
This cache is placed in respect of the brave young men, who payed the highest price for a free Denmark.
