Geocache Description:

Not as many positions as the deLorme US state series...but probably just as hard!!

Ignore the above co-ordinates, they're the middle of Shawnigan Lake.
The final will be sent to cachers upon completion.
The terrain:1 rating refers to the final cache location ONLY.

What is the Vancouver Island Topo Challenge?

Well, it's a multi-stage cache, with a bit of a different twist, located on Vancouver Island(!). The guidelines and format are very heavily borrowed from the legendary Moun10bike's Washington DeLorme Challenge page.

While researching a source for American topo maps, I came across these DeLorme challenges, and began planning a way to incorporate such a challenge locally. Finally, here it is!

The Canadian government 1:50K topo maps are available at many locations, including online directly from eTopo. The eTopo set is great, the scanning quality is top-notch (they are raster, not vector, files), and the maps are already calibrated for OziExplorer, Fugawi and any program that can read GeoTIFF files.

The goal of this challenge is simple (ha!): to find or place a cache on (almost) every one of the 55 1:50K topo blocks of Vancouver Island proper, specifically the blocks with following designations:
92 B 05,06,11,12,13
C 08,09,10,11,13,14,15,16
E 01,08,09,10,14,15,16 NOT 07 - Estevan Point
F 01,02,03,04,05,06,07,08,10,11,12,13,14,15
G 04
K 03,04,05,06
L 01,02,03,04,05,06,07,08,10,11,12,13,14
102 I 08,09,16

Find or place a cache
on Vancouver Island proper (as defined below)
in each of the "bright" blocks of this map
(55 blocks in all).

FTF - a full set of eTopo SW BC maps, donated by eTopo.ca
This set includes the eTopo "Memory Map" software for realtime tracking!

Great prizes for 2TF and 3TF as well!
All finishers will receive an engraved trophy or plaque. (November 15, 2008 edit)
but of course, it's the bragging rights that really matter, right?

Any comments/discussion/trip co-ordination etc etc can be done on this page by posting a note, then all watchers will receive your notice. I will occasionally "clean up" the logs as postings become irrelevant/outdated.

Based on feedback from and incidents seen with DeLorme Challenges, here are some clarification and/or guidelines. (When in doubt, ask...we can discuss it or even seek guidance from others, but the final decision rests with the cache owner.)

1. The posted coordinates are not the actual coordinates for the final cache. The actual final cache location will be given to cachers upon completion of the challenge.
2. Generally accepted rules, guidelines and conditions for logging a cache find apply. These must be bona fide caches listed on Geocaching.com that you have personally (physically) found or placed on or after your indicated participation date as you post by using the NOTE function (not the FOUND function). The found or placed date is the physically found or placed date. The dates in the cache log book and online must be the same. This date must be on or after your indicated participation date. When you post a note that you intend to participate, the CO will receive an email. "Past posting" notes regarding your intention to start will be deleted.
3. Placement of a cache counts the same as finding a cache on that block, but only if it was physically placed on or after your indicated participation date. Hides with a published date that is before your indicated participation date do not count toward the Challenge..
4. All cache types that have a log book count as finds or hides for the Challenge. NO LOG BOOK, NO COUNT! Yes, this means no event caches. (The purpose of this is so every cacher has an equal chance at all caches by other cachers...no caches dependent on dates where work or other commitments prevent attendance.)
5. IF YOU PLACE A CACHE, IT MUST NOT BE A MICRO. For puzzle or multi-stage caches, the final co-ordinates will determine the map grid, not the posted co-ordinates. clarified June 10, 2006
6. If a block includes space not located on Vancouver Island proper, only caches on the Vancouver Island portion count. To clarify, the area where the cache is placed/found must never be cut off from Vancouver Island by tidal waters. I will use the geocaching.com posted coordinates for a cache when determining exactly where a given cache falls (exception: see guideline #5). The plot will be in OziExplorer on eTopo images, as calibrated by the eTopo distribution files.
7. While you may have others with you when you find the final cache, only those cachers who have fulfilled ALL criteria for this cache will be allowed to log it as a find. Find logs by other cachers will be deleted.
Persons who do significantly more than half of the positions simultaneously (same caches, same dates) will share any prizes. Separation means things like finding/placing different caches, or finding same caches at least 3 days apart.
8. Before starting, you must indicate your intention to participate by logging a note on this page. If you would like others to see your progress, just keep posting notes on this page to reflect how many (but not which) requirements you have completed. Even if you don't want your progress posted, you must still indicate your intention to participate BEFORE YOU VISIT OR PLACE ANY CACHES. "Found" or "Progress" logs by cachers who don't follow this guideline will be deleted.
9. There is no restriction on the number of blocks you "visit" in a day, and no restriction on the number of blocks you log in a day.
10. All caches must be brand new to you. In other words, you are either placing the cache, or you have never previously logged the cache you are using to fulfill the requirement.
11. You will be visiting some very remote country, with no facilities. Please put safety first! Log a travel plan with a reliable party and DON'T DEVIATE FROM IT unless safety dictates it at that moment. (If you do deviate, as soon as possible, update any changes with your safety person.) If you need to, file a travel plan with me, and confirm before you leave. Take appropriate gear and plan for unexpected overnight stays. Some areas are only accessible by boat. Carry a VHF radio with you, and file a float plan with the Coast Guard (use VHF channel 83A). You can check the marine weather forecasts by clicking here
12. When you've completed the challenge, go to your "My Account" page of geocaching.com, list your finds and/or hides that you are using for the Challenge. Put a checkmark next to the appropriate caches and generate a .gpx file. Email me the file as an attachment. Contact me to get the correct email address (because you can't attach files using the geocaching.com messaging system.) I will plot your caches, and, assuming everything checks out, email you the co-ordinates for the final cache. Verifications and final co-ordinate notifications will be processed in the order received, BUT if somebody gets their notice after you and still beats you to the final, they're the FTF (or whatever).

This cache cannot be logged until this final physical container is found and the logbook inside signed.
13. Pictures uploaded to the gallery as part of this cache are much encouraged, and will even kick in a bonus prize or two! (see point 15)
14. KEEP IN MIND: This is a friendly challenge, not a competition (unless YOU want it to be!), designed to promote geocaching in some of the more remote locations of Vancouver Island. Team up! Get a camping party together and spend a weekend with other cachers in some beautiful areas.
15. Post your photos as part of this cache to enter a draw for supplementary prizes. You get one draw entry for every (fun or interesting) photo you upload to the "gallery".
16. I'm going to do this challenge as well, but of course, I won't claim any prizes or log it as a find, but I do get to brag! Any challengers?
Many thanks go out to "Haicoole" for the original idea for these types of caches and to the other cachers who have taken the idea and established it for their own areas, especially Moun10bike.

Thanks as well to TDI2000 who found an error in the maps and emailed me so quickly!
