Murdock
Park has a wooded area (urban forest) which is filled with
dirt trails. These trails are like snake paths with a lot of
switchbacks. There is also a lot of elevation change (for
Indiana) as you walk the trails. I was excited to find this
in the city. Although I do a lot of walking on city streets,
I get bored with the level terrain. If you feel the same way,
and want a place to do a bit of hiking with some variation;
if you want a place like that right here in Lafayette; you,
too, will like this park.
The
woods are thick enough to make good GPS readings difficult. Be
prepared to look for a while. This is the reason for the difficulty
rating of 2. (The difficulty rating was changed to 1 on June 7,
2006 - see owner's note for that date to see why.) The terrain
rating is self-explanatory.
Be
Cautious: The trails are VERY slippery when they are wet. The areas
off trail are even slipperier. Due to the steepness and (sometimes)
slipperiness, this cache is NOT for small children.
Even
in dry weather it is advisable to wear shoes or boots with a good
tread.
The
cache is a plastic box (camouflaged, of course) roughly 5" X 8" X
3". The initial SWAG includes: a golf ball, a spool of white
thread, two "magic towels", a mini FM radio, an emergency sewing
repair kit, and a refrigerator picture holder. Please do not
overfill the cache container as it will make it difficult to close
tight and keep the contents dry. NOTE: This container was damaged
and the log lost. A new container is in place. See owner's note
dated 06/01/07.
