Geocache Description:

Wear orange - it's hunting season. No one should be hunting on this property, but some people still do. Don't be surprised (or offended) if someone drives or walks up and asks you what you're doing there. The neighbors keep very close track of all people and their vehicles.

The Bjornson Education-Recreation Center is owned by the School District of the Menomonie Area. Parking is available at: N 44 55.829 W092 04.850 but please do not block the road into the site. There are 443 acres of northern hardwoods (maple, oak, ash, basswood, yellow and white birch), coniferous plantations (red and white pine and spruce) and stands of poplar. Hardwood ridges rise 250 feet above the valley floor. There are several large springs that form the headwaters of Hay Creek, which flows east through the property. The springs are marked on the maps and signs are posted at the trailhead to the sites. There is a lot of wildlife and it’s a very peaceful place (when the students aren’t there!)

This is a beautiful recreational area with gravel roads, dirt logging roads and grass trails. It is perfect for hiking, biking, picnicking, horseback riding, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. It is used year round by many people, not just the students. There is no hunting allowed. The well-maintained trails are marked and easy to follow. There are a few maps posted out on the trails also, but they do not have those nice little pointers that say, “You are here”. It’s a good idea to mark a few waypoints for yourself. There are signs posted along the trails that are short and informative. This is a very educational place for children (and adults.)

The classroom is located in a large clearing with a picnic shelter, picnic tables, benches, a large fire ring, pit toilets, an old fashioned pump for drinking water (works great) and a lovely little stream. There is plenty to look at while you are in the classroom area. There is also an old homestead nearby, just follow the signs. If you have young children, watch them closely in the homestead area as they could fall into the old foundation. The camping area has a large shelter, picnic tables, benches, a fire ring, pit toilets, an old fashioned pump (works great) for drinking water and 6 Adirondack sleeping shelters (one is wheelchair accessible.)

Special interest areas include a small pond, a spring fed stream, a forestry trail with 12 tree species to identify and a geological study area, which includes exposed bedrock. If you find a fossil in a rock - please - do not take it. Please do not climb up the large rock walls either. There are ways to get up the hills without damaging this beautiful area. Remember, this is an educational site as well as a recreation area.

Additional information about the Bjornson Education-Recreation Center can be found at: (visit link)

Special Information: If you click on the Bjornson Events Calendar button (on the website) you can see when students will be at the site. This calendar is updated constantly and it is very accurate! Overnight camping groups are also listed. If you’d like to head out there when it’s quiet - check the calendar before you go. Teachers have to arrange for bus transportation, so they have to sign up in advance (usually at least a week).

The Bjornson Education-Recreation Center is used a lot during the school year. All of the caches in this series are located along the logging roads and main trails. There is no need to bushwhack to get to a general cache area, unless you really, really want to. Most of the caches are within 100’ of a main trail or logging road. Please rehide the cache really well as the students go everywhere!
