Geocache Description:

The coordinates will take you to Wangaratta’s Pioneer Cemetery, located on Faithfull Street. The cemetery contains only a single monument recognising the persons known to be buried there, as very few records and headstones remain.

The Pioneer Cemetery operated from settlement (when Wangaratta was known as Ovens Crossing) until the early 1850s. In 1849, local Justice of the Peace, Dr. Francis Murphy of Tarrawingee, requested that a new burial ground be constructed. The location chosen was the corner of Tone Road and Mason Street, and the General Cemetery has been in use since 1851.

While wandering the small grounds of the Pioneer Cemetery you may encounter people fishing at the nearby junction of the Ovens and King Rivers, also a point of interest if you have the time.

For those interested, the inscription on the monument is taken from "Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard" by Thomas Gray. The full poem can be read here.
