Geocache Description:

Accessible only by boat with exceptions.

The Ovens are a unique natural spot that was created by the ocean waves pounding inexorably against the rocky coast creating holes that resemble ovens. Parents used to warn their children to “not get caught in the ovens or you would never get free.” Located on the coast of Mt. Desert they can be seen from Lamoine Beach across the Eastern Bay. There is no public access from land although the road appears to be very close by. DO NOT cross private land to get to the cache without permission of the owner. Access is by water unless you are renting a nearby lodging. The closest launch point is Lamoine Beach which is about a 30 minute paddle by kayak crossing Eastern Bay under good conditions…flat water. Conditions can change quickly so be prepared. For a longer paddle, you can launch from Hadley Point or Bar Harbor and hug the coast. We did the paddle in 25 minutes and this was the first time in our kayaks this year. Going back took longer because we were facing a headwind that had picked up causing 1.5 to 2ft waves. At high tide, you can beach within 15ft of the cache. Beware of the overhead cliff and the impending chance of rocks letting go. Cache is an ammo container. Please secure upright and in the manner you found it to avoid it being lost to an unusually high tide or storm waves. There is a letterbox sharing the same container so please leave the letterboxing materials in the cache. For those not familiar with letterboxing, the procedure is to use the stamp in the letterbox to stamp your personal book and stamp the logbook with YOUR stamp.
