Geocache Description:

Dannebrog
Apistemplet i Frederiksberg Have

I guldalderens landskabsbilleder skildres ofte tidens sværmeri for oprindelighed.

Union Jack
The Apistempl in Frederiksberg Have

The classicist Apistemple north-west of Frederiksberg Castle was build by N.A. Abildgaard in connection with the park being redesigned. The landscape paintings of the golden age often show the periods fondness for original qualities. And original was both the farmer on the field and prehistoric structures from Nordic as well as Greek mythology. Naturally there had to be a temple in Greek style in the romantic garden Frederiksberg.

The building was erected in 1802-04 and was given the name "Apistemlet" (Apis Temple) from the bull in the fronton. The temple front consists of 10 columns whereof 8 are meant to originate from Christian VII's Palace, earlier called Moltke's Palace. The last 2 columns are replicas.

On the inside the temple consists of a "barrelarched" room with 2 windows which had stained glass originally. The room was furnished with a sofa, chairs and console tables which the royalties could use for drinking tea. From 1874-1970 the temple was used as entrance to the nearby Zoo (Zoologisk Have, founded 1859) and the décor changed. The temple is occasionally open for the public.
