Geocache Description:

Under 1960-talet tog bilturismen fart på allvar i Sverige. Lagom till turistsäsongen 1967 invigdes turiststationen i Jävre, tänkt som en turistportal mot Norrbotten och Nordkalotten. Den futuristiska byggnaden uppfördes efter ritningar av arkitekt Gunnar Lehtipalo till en kostnad av 500 000 kronor.

Turiststationen placerades strategiskt, nära gränsen till Västerbottens län intill gamla Riks 13, nuvarande E 4. En perfekt plats att stanna till vid för turister på väg norrut. Men bara två månader efter invigningen verkställdes högertrafikomläggningen och informationscentralen hamnade på "fel sida" av vägen.
Turiststationen lades 1978 i malpåse och var under en tid rivningshotad. År 2003 öppnades den igen och blev byggnadsminnesförklarad. Sedan dess har den välbesökta turiststationen öppet sommartid och visar bland annat utställning med tidstypiska föremål från 60-talet.

Intill turiststationen ligger Arkeologstigen, med fornlämningar i form av stensättningar och gravrösen från bronsåldern. Besök gärna Skags fyr intill båthamnen på andra sidan E 4. Intill fyren finns Sveriges första mc-motell, en sjöbod med sju bäddar, som erbjuder gratis övernattning för mc-åkare.

Under the 1960:s the car tourism expanded fast in Sweden. Right in time for the tourist season 1967, the touristcenter in Jävre, thought as a gate to Norrbotten was opened. The futuristic building was build from the drawings done by the architect Gunnar Lehtipalo. The cost for the project was 500 000 Skr.

It was placed strategically near the border of Västerbotten right to the old road – Riks 13, later renamed to E4. A perfect place for tourists to stop on their way north. Only two months after the opening Sweden changed from driving on the left to drive on the right side and the touristcenter suddenly was on the “wrong” side of the road.

It was closed in 1978 and was under a time threatened to be tear down. 2003 it was reopened and is now declaimed as an historical monument. It is now open during the summer and has an exhibition with a lot of stuff from the sixties.

Just by the touristcenter lies the “archeologypath” with a lot of old stone settings and graves from the Bronze Age.
The lighthouse (Skags lighthouse) on the other side of the road is also worth a visit. Just by the lighthouse lies a motorcycle- motel where you can stay overnight for free if you ride a MC.
