Enjoy a mini-tour of the the heart of Downtown Portland by walking the length of Broadway, from Union Station to Portland State University.
The cache is not at the listed coordinates! It is a pay-to-park lot at the north end of Broadway. Use it, or use street parking (a bit cheaper), or take transit. However you get there, this is the starting point for this multi-waypoint puzzle cache.
Along the way, see historic neighborhoods, grand hotels and Pioneer Courthouse Square (Portland's 'Living Room'). See the Max Light Rail and Portland Streetcar. Notice fine dinning, myriad shops and old government buildings. The Arlene Schnitzer concert hall (old Portland/Paramount Theater) will dazzle you. You will walk just over 2 miles (round-trip) to find the photos and grab the cache. The cache is within a block of Broadway and can be snagged on the return trip. Budget an hour or so, more if you really want to soak it all in.
This is a multi-waypoint cache, but you have to find the waypoints using only the pictures below. Each photo was snapped while on the sidewalks of Broadway. The photos are in order along Broadway, from north to south. (The last photo is 1.1mi from the parking lot, so don't wander too far!) The photos are in the gallery for this cache (Alternatively, the photos are arranged on a single sheet for easy reference, or are available in a 4.5M zip file in high resolution.)
When you find the spot from which the photo was taken, note the 'tenths' decimal place of the minutes portion of the Latitude coordinate with your GPSr.
(The digit indicated by the underlined 'X' here: N 45 xx.Xxx)
The digit you get for photo 'A' will represent the letter A in the coordinates, and so on.
(Checksum = 36)
Once you find all 9 locations, plug the results into the coordinate below.
North 45° 3N.CDH'
West 122° 4G.IEF'
where N = A-B
The GPS reception is really jumpy in the urban jungle (worse than tree cover, it seems). I arranged the photos to allow for at least 175 feet of error, but it would be good to give the GPS unit time to settle at each location.
The final is a micro, so bring a pen. All the waypoints, including the final, are wheelchair accessible. Enjoy!
