Geocache Description:

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY. LOGS WHICH DO NOT COMPLY WILL BE DELETED.

This cache’s main purpose is to track the progress of Soccer City for the 2010 Soccer World Cup. Some work has begun in the area, but I thought it would be interesting to make a visual record of this progress and decided to enlist the help of the caching community.

Other caches in the 2010 series:-

(GCYZKA) Project 2010 - Loftus Versveld

There will be (based on most recent press statements) ten stadiums used in the world cup.

Three existing stadiums in Gauteng, will be upgraded. Soccer City (FNB stadium), Ellis Park in Johannesburg, and Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria. The Royal Bafokeng stadium in North West will be upgraded, as will Vodacom Park in Mangaung (Bloemfontein) in the Free State.

Five new stadiums will be built or rebuilt. In Limpopo, the Peter Mokaba stadium in Polokwane will host 2010 games. New stadiums will be built at Mbombela in Mpumalanga, and in the Nelson Mandela Metro (encompassing Port Elizabeth) in the Eastern Cape.

Kings Park stadium in Durban will be rebuilt for the event, and in the Western Cape, Cape Town’s Green Point stadium will be rebuilt.

When finding the cache you need to take a minimum of three photo’s of the stadium. One at each of the photo waypoints. These must be included in your log or it will be deleted.

Take Photo’s of stadium at PHOTO1, PHOTO2 and PHOTO3.

To the cache. The cache is away from the stadium and provides a perfect view of the stadium and of Johannesburg. The view of Johannesburg to the east can be rewarding at dawn and dusk with interesting lighting and the occasional thunderstorm brewing over the city in summer.

The area is available 24/7, but it is not considered safe at night, so don’t try it….oh and your photo’s may be a little …. dark.

DO NOT attempt the cache when there is a function on at the stadium (the hordes WILL notice you)
DO NOT attempt the cache if the metro police are parked nearby, they WILL see you and become suspicious
NOTE: due to the nature of the area, if you linger in a spot the muggles will investigate when you leave, so do not linger near the cache if you need to wait for muggles to move on.
NOTE: Muggles enjoy relaxing in the shade of the trees between 12h00-14h00, so try and avoid these times.

You can literally drive to within 5m of the cache, however I'd recommend you stay on the main tar and take the 20m walk. Make sure the cache is properly replaced.

The cache is easily accessible and is about 60cm off the ground. It's in a silver bison tube, make sure it's closed tightly. Bring your own pen to sign the log.

As construction over the next few years may interfere with access to the area, here are a number of alternate routes to the location.

Directions:-

If on the M1 southbound:-

WPT1: Take the Xavier St offramp (Exit 5)
WPT2: Left into Booysens Reserve Road
WPT3: Turn Right

If on the M1 northbound:-

WPT4: Take the Xavier St offramp (Exit 5)
WPT2: Left into Booysens Reserve Road
WPT3: Turn Right

If on the N1 southbound:-

WPT5: Take Rand Show Road exit (Exit 67)
WPT6: Turn left and keep left
WPT7: Keep left

If on the N12 westbound:-

WPT8: Take exit to right (N1 North to Pretoria)
WPT9: Take exit to left
WPT10: Turn right into Rand Show Road
WPT6: Turn left and keep left
WPT7: Keep left

If WPT6 and WPT7 inaccessible then replace with:-

WPT11: Turn left into Nasrec Road
WPT12: Turn left
WPT3: Turn left

There are a number of smaller roads in the proximity of the stadium if one needs to bypass construction work. Avoid the Soweto Highway (M70) as this will either take you into Soweto (Westbound) or Orphiton (Eastbound).
