NT parking at Dungeon Ghyll New Hotel provides easy access - the cache is hidden on the eastern side of the force. A short steepish climb.
The rough lane along which the path runs from the Old Hotel was once the main thoroughfare along the valley before the road was constructed and the hotels were built. A century ago the only place for refreshments in the area was Millbeck Farm, and this lane led directly to it from Mickleden.
Climb higher and you will see a steep scree slope above the upper ravine – this is the site of a prehistoric axe factory and much of the scree is the debris from working stone and not as a result of the weathering of the crags above. Should you venture thus far, although unnecessary to retrieve the cache do take care – I know, I nearly was that soldier
once upon a time!!
