Geocache Description:

This cache can be found to the south west of Fordingbridge, beside Ashford Water, one of several streams feeding water through the town and on into the River Avon.

These streams, and the Avon itself made the location of the town economically important. The waters served a wide range of mills over the years. At least two were recorded in Fordingbridge (just Forde then) in the Domesday Book of 1066. The Town Bridge was once an important crossing point for the River Avon, and a junction of the Ringwood to Salisbury and Cranborne to Southampton roads. The River Avon was, at one time, navigable from Christchurch to here and beyond. This cache is on the western end of a bridge, but it does not cross any of the named rivers or waters. This bridge was built in 2006 to enable a footpath to continue once a flood prevention channel had been cut from the side of Ashford Water to divert excess water to the Avon. This prevents flooding in the lower town and Bowerwood. It is best to park near the church, about a third of a mile from the cache, or in the town centre car park, about double that. There really is no suitable parking at the road access nearest to the cache. Fordingbridge is well served by watering places. Our favourites? For coffee, snacks and meals, “River Cafe” or the “Fig Tree” in Roman Quay (another story!), on the High St. Otherwise, any of the local pubs or cafes will look after you well. The container is a tiny micro tube, just 10mm X 30mm with only space for a tiny log. PLEASE TAKE YOUR OWN PENCIL. Take care with the container as it is quite small. Please reattach using the magnetic base.
