Found this while vacationing at the cabins at Bahia Honda State park, just prior to being evacuated because of tropical storm Fay. I odn't know if the other finders posted the correct picture. This is supposed to be labelled number 4, and should be 17 feet away from BH No. 2 1935, which I believe mine was.

Found this benchmark by serendipity. It is in excellent condition. My friends and I had reserved a snorkel trip out to Looe Key, but the boat had a prop problem and had to turn around, so we came here to snorkel. We did get to see a manatee in the channel... my first!

About 200 yards oceanside is a nice gorgonian flat in about 4-5' of water with some reef fish, sponges, and lots of urchins.

We love camping at Bahia Honda and come to this spot all the time. Never paid any attention to benchmarks until we started caching.

ABOUT 13.4 MILES SOUTHWEST ALONG U.S. HIGHWAY 1 FROM THE POST OFFICE AT MARATHON, ON BAHIA HONDA KEY, NEAR THE EAST BANK OF BIG SPANISH CHANNEL, AT THE EAST END OF THE BRIDGE OVER CHANNEL, SET ON THE TOP OF THE SOUTH CONCRETE WING WALL, 105 YARDS WEST OF THE EAST END OF THE BRIDGE, 16 FEET SOUTH OF THE CENTER LINE OF THE HIGHWAY (MEASURED UNDER THE BRIDGE), 17.2 FEET NORTHWEST OF W BAHIA RM 2 AND ABOUT 30 FEET BELOW THE LEVEL OF THE HIGHWAY.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991.
  • This Tidal Bench Mark is designated as VM 6368 by the Center for Operational Oceanographic Products and Services.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (g = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
