A random find on the way to Key West

I found this by accident while stopped for s photo here at the old bridge. I intended to find a number of geocaches but this was a nice extra.

W noticed this today when we were doing a nearby geocache and we saw a large lizard run under the bridge. While looking for the lizard, there was a benchmark! Then we looked on the other side of the bridge, and there was ANOTHER benchmark - this one!

Documented History (by the NGS)

01/01/1936 by CGS (MONUMENTED)
DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1936 (ERM) STATION IS LOCATED ON THE S WING WALL OF THE E ABUTMENT OF THE KNIGHT KEY VIADUCT 13 FEET FROM THE CENTER LINE OF THE VIADUCT. REFERENCE MARKS TO BE ESTABLISHED WHEN HIGHWAY IS COMPLETED.
01/01/1964 by CGS (GOOD)
RECOVERY NOTE BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1964 (GEV) STATION RECOVERED IN GOOD CONDITION. R.M. FOR KNIGHT 2, 1.758 METERS, 342 DEG 59 MIN FROM SOMBRERO KEY LIGHT 1857, WAS NOT FOUND. HOWEVER, R.M. 2 FOR OLD STATION KNIGHT WAS FOUND SOUTHERLY ALONG WINGWALL 3.536 METERS FROM THE STATION. THE DESCRIPTION IS ADEQUATE, EXCEPT IT SHOULD READ ON THE SOUTH WINGWALL OF EAST ABUTMENT OF SEVEN MILE BRIDGE INSTEAD OF KNIGHT KEY VIADUCT.
01/01/1966 by CGS (GOOD)
RECOVERY NOTE BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1966 (RRG) THE STATION AND REFERENCE MARK NO. 2 WAS FOUND AND IN GOOD CONDITION. REFERENCE MARK NO. 1 WAS SEARCHED FOR BUT NOT RECOVERED. STATION MAY BE REACHED BY GOING 2.9 MILES SOUTHWEST ALONG U.S. HIGHWAY 1 FROM THE POST OFFICE AT MARATHON TO EAST END OF SEVEN MILE BRIDGE AND STATION SITE. THE STATION IS SET ON TOP OF THE SOUTH CONCRETE WING WALL OF THE BRIDGE AND 12.5 FEET SOUTH OF THE CENTER LINE OF THE HIGHWAY. IT IS STAMPED KNIGHT 2 1936. REFERENCE MARK NO. 2 IS 11.4 FEET SOUTH-SOUTHEAST OF THE STATION, 23 FEET SOUTH OF THE CENTER LINE OF THE HIGHWAY AND ABOUT 3 FEET BELOW THE LEVEL OF THE HIGHWAY AND SET IN BRIDGE WING WALL. IT IS STAMPED KNIGHT NO 2 1935. REFERENCE MARK NO. 1 WAS NOT FOUND. THE MEASUREMENT FROM THE STATION WOULD PUT THE MARK UNDER BRIDGE ABUTMENT.
01/01/1966 by NGS (GOOD)
RECOVERY NOTE BY NATIONAL GEODETIC SURVEY 1966 2.9 MI SW FROM MARATHON. ABOUT 2.9 MILES SOUTHWEST ALONG U.S. HIGHWAY 1 FROM THE POST OFFICE AT MARATHON, SET ON THE TOP OF THE SOUTH CONCRETE WING WALL AT THE EAST END OF THE SEVEN MILE BRIDGE, 12.5 FEET SOUTH OF THE CENTER LINE OF THE HIGHWAY AND ABOUT 2 FEET BELOW THE LEVEL OF THE HIGHWAY.
01/01/1976 by NGS (GOOD)
RECOVERY NOTE BY NATIONAL GEODETIC SURVEY 1976 (CLN) THE STATION MARK AND REFERENCE MARK 2 WERE RECOVERED AND FOUND IN GOOD CONDITION, REFERENCE MARK 1 WAS NOT RECOVERED. IT WOULD BE VERY DIFFICULT AND UNSAFE TO SET UP ON THIS STATION AS IT IS ONLY 1.2 FEET EAST OF THE EDGE OF 25 FOOT DROP OFF INTO THE WATER AND 1.7 FEET SOUTH OF EDGE OF BRIDGE AND VERY BUSY HIGHWAY. STATION IS LOCATED ABOUT 2 MILES SOUTHWEST OF MARATHAN ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF U.S. HIGHWAY 1 AND ON THE EAST END OF THE 7 MILE BRIDGE. AIRLINE DISTANCE AND DIRECTION FROM NEAREST TOWN 2 MILES SOUTHWEST OF MARATHON.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were established by classical geodetic methods and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in May 1991.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991.
  • This Tidal Bench Mark is designated as VM 6305 by the Center for Operational Oceanographic Products and Services.
  • The Laplace correction was computed from DEFLEC99 derived deflections.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (g = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
