I found my first benchmark about a month ago on a walk with Foon. For some reason, I decided to check for nearby benchmarks tonight and I couldn't pass up finding this one. There's been a lot of changes since the previous logs almost 10 years ago, but this one is still there.

As described, triangle only.

East side of Lewis, south of Katella, looking north.

An easy find but the disk is just about featureless. Smooth as a babies backside, the only thing visible on it is the stamped triangle. It feels like it was smoothed with a fine jewelers file but I have no idea how it got this way. If it weren't for the spray painted marker lettering next to it, I most likely would not have claimed this one as a find. I have seen this type of marking before and know that it is legit.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in February 1997.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (G = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
