Headed to Galveston to do some benchmark hunting with TxCinnamonGirl. Founds lots of different kinds and had a great time biking around the Strand and along the seawall as well as taking the bikes across the ferry - made for a much shorter wait than taking the car. Hidden from casual observers but not from us.

Mark is left of stairs, right of the large column (in corner).

I knew there was a benchmark over here but there was some construction in the area the last time I tried for it. This time it was an easy find. No picture to post, but it's still just the same as others have noted. Still marked with orange/pink paint around it and kind of up in the corner.

Found it

Found in good shape.

A man observed me take the picture of the disk, then remarked "What a NICE picture"...I thought so.

We were walking along the Stand and I knew there was a benchmark by a pillar in the Sealy Building. I spotted this one and Gloria had the camera at the time so she snapped this picture. Unfortunately only 1 picture was taken and you can clearly see 1_13 for the date but to me the poor upper number looks like it has a 5 in it.

How cool to find a disk placed on a building in 1913! I bet there are some really old disk around town. We enjoyed the Strand.

Back again to look for more bench marks. A nice day for benchmarking along the seawall while I am in Galveston for the weekend. No problem finding this benchmark

Found after a visit to Tsunami... this is a gorgeous part of town... I hope to see it return to it's glory!

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991.
  • This Tidal Bench Mark is designated as VM 846 by the Center for Operational Oceanographic Products and Services.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (G = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
