I work in this building, and had to walk over to 2200 Market to retrieve a broken computer for someone.
On my way back I had a photo op!

It's easy to see why HC would think the first number is a five but I feel sure it's a three. I've seen this several times, the threes they stamp on early benchmarks look a lot like fives. But, the benchmark was placed in 1935 and if you look at the three in that you see it looks just like the one in the mark designation.

I'm slightly confused, since I found this exactly where the benchmark description says it should be, the the marker on the wall is engraved with J505, not J305. Oh well, it must be a typo on one part or the other.

Headed to Galveston to do some benchmark hunting with TxCinnamonGirl. Founds lots of different kinds and had a great time biking around the Strand and along the seawall as well as taking the bikes across the ferry - made for a much shorter wait than taking the car. Quick spot and a great place to park for two hours to bike the Strand.

Here we go walking down the side walk heading to the train museum. My wife Shere' says 'Hey, there is one of those marker things you look for!' Sure enough there it was on the gray wall about hip high. The museum was rather nice too. Lots of things to look at. They had three very nice HO scale layouts. There are old passenger cars you can walk thru. The museum has an elongated penny machine too! The brass cap date is 1955.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991.
  • This Tidal Bench Mark is designated as VM 847 by the Center for Operational Oceanographic Products and Services.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (G = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
