Checking out the grand ol' courthouse and found this benchmark.

Was in Bastrop looking for the DAR 1918 pink granite markers that designate the old Kings Highway/El Camino Real de los Tejas roadway. This basically is where Hwy 21 now is but theres are deviations to Kings Highway that are different from Hwy 21. That is why I was in downtown Bastrop. There are two of these markers in downtown. While here, I stopped at the County Courthouse to see what kind of markers and memorials were at the courthouse square. Spotted the benchmark near the front doorway (on your right side when facing the door.) It sure has a lot of numbers stamped on it. Very confusing to try to figure out what is what. There is a 37, what appears to be 666 and SA 65: all below the lightly stamped 377 that this benchmark claims as its stamp number. Oh well, I found it any way.

It was late after we left the nearby event cache, but this one was too close to pass up, even at night. I had help, but I found the bench mark disk. TFTB!!

I don't get many benchmarks, but when I realized this one was so nearby, had to go find it. Blame (thank) NUrHand for that.
I like the coords offered by sec-guy and PI Joe (2010 & 2003). They seem much more accurate than those posted with the listing.
Captured image....

We took a break from chasing caches around town to finding a couple benchmarks near the courthouse. Very cool. Thanks so much!

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991. WARNING-Repeat measurements at this control monument indicate possible vertical movement.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (G = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
