Spent to good 45mins to 1hr searching for it but did not find it today... I had brought along all the previous notes / corrected coords / hints and even used the same triangulation methods suggested in the NGS's "Documented History" section, but could not locate it. I did find the indentation others have mentioned and dug up as much dirt as I could -- but no benchmark.

If anyone does find it, please contact me: I would love to be proven wrong and spot it! Thanks...

Nabbing a few caches and BMs in town for a week.

Got lucky... stepped in the depression that is BM1133...

Found this in a little depression covered with small leaves and a little mud. Cleaned the mud away. In good shape.

Walked right across it going from the side walk to the stated coords. It was covered in leaves so I didn't notice it until I had searched a bit.

Found it, albeit covered with leaves, with no problem after selecting the proper datum on my receiver.

Found in good condition. WGS84 coordinates on my Garmin Foretrex 101 showed N 30 17.066, W 97 43.835. Accuracy by the device showed 3-D location lock to 18 feet, but was 21.6 feet away from NAD83 coordinates. Notes by Peeve (3/25/2003) were helpful; that is, it's about a foot west of the flowerbed under some leaves.

A great place to bring a sack lunch especially if you work on campus like I do ;) Too bad the new addition to the stadium blocks the view of the Tower :(

Still here and in great shape! And in a very pretty location. Bring a good book or a picnic lunch and enjoy this one for awhile! In my college days, I would come down from Waco and meet up with my UT buds and hang out all night close to this very spot, many times. Never saw the BM though!

photoThe infamous "grassy knoll"
This is the infamous "grassy knoll" you've heard so much about. Oops. Wrong Texas city. Actually, its just the grassy knoll mentioned in the verbal BM directions. The BM is on the top of the hill, to the right of those stairs, only about a foot or so from a flowerbed.
photoThe BM
This is the actual benchmark, still quite legible. Note how deep it is in the grass... it was completely covered with leaves when I found it, so you may have to keep your eyes peeled pretty well.
photoView of BM 0889
That smokestack centered in the middle of the picture is BM0889. Two BM finds with one location! Sweet!
photoLBJ building and fountain
This picture was taken about 300 feet away from the BM, still atop the grassy knoll. I love this fountain... it shoots up so high you can see it almost all the way across campus! Like I said, this is a very pretty area to hang out and relax if you are ever on campus.

Found in good condition! It took a bit of time to find it. It happened to be a slightly rainy day and I had brought my golf umbrella. We searched the area for about 30 mins and knew we had to be near it! I had no idea how near until I stuck my umbrella tip into the ground to contemplate and BINGO! I had been standing on top of it for about 5 mins! we pulled back the grass and dirt covering it and confirmed that it was indeed the marker! Good luck finding this one! The physical description and coordinates were right on!

  • The horizontal coordinates were established by classical geodetic methods and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in February 1996. No horizontal observational check was made to the station.
  • The NAVD 88 height was computed by applying the VERTCON shift value to the NGVD 29 height (displayed under SUPERSEDED SURVEY CONTROL.)
  • The Laplace correction was computed from DEFLEC99 derived deflections.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
