Got this while visiting the fort.

I found this one today while I was out there enjoying the great weather.

Observed during visit to Ft Sumter.

There were no park rangers available to escort me to take a closer photo. The mark lies roughly on a line from the flagpole southeast to the wall (and the mark) in line with the front range marker offshore of Ft Sumter to the SE.

Looking from flagpole to wall (mark) in line with the navigation aid just offshore to the SE.

Fun find while visiting the Fort.

Cool!

Definitely ask permission before going close.

Ah! One of those places that I've always wanted to visit: Fort Sumter, Charleston, South Carolina!!!!
Got stuck for two hours on I-95 heading back to Charleston, due to an accident on I-95. Which is it going to be? Boat ride to Fort Sumter? Or a South Carolina EarthCache? I'm an NPS junkie! The boat trip to Fort Sumter won paws down! Great boat ride! Arrived at Fort Sumter with print outs of all the benchmarks. Did the virtual cache, and went hunting for the benchmarks. Unfortunately, most of them are in highly restricted areas, atop the walls. Aha! There is one! Behind the fence... Restricted area. (Only a forty foot drop off the wall...) I asked the kindly ranger if I could take a close up picture. He said that I could, and accompanied me. Note: Do not attempt this without permission from the rangers!

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991. WARNING-Repeat measurements at this control monument indicate possible vertical movement.
  • This Tidal Bench Mark is designated as VM 14327 by the Center for Operational Oceanographic Products and Services.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (g = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
