Found while going to Chiricahua National Monument.

Visited this benchmark during a light rain as a large thunderstorm rolled through the area. Monument is in good shape next to a barbwire fence.

Recovered station PINERY 2 along with RM 2 and RM 3, all in good condition. RM 4 not searched for.

Found disc marked Pinery 2 1973, current location is within 1 ft E of east right of way fence. New witness post by Cochise County is about 1 ft w of fence. From the location shot, the disc is directly behind the fence post . Reference mark 2, the disc marked Pinery No. 2 1935 is about 8 ft WSW of the station mark, and the arrow is pointing W or WNW - away from the station marker. Other marks were not searched for.

DESCRIBED BY NATIONAL GEODETIC SURVEY 1973 (CN) THE STATION IS LOCATED IN THE NORTHEAST CORNER OF THE INTERSECTION OF ARIZONA HIGHWAYS 186 AND 181, 32 MILES SOUTH BY ROAD FROM WILCOX. AT POINT WHERE HIGHWAY 186 ENDS AND HIGHWAY 181 LEADS EAST TO CHIRICAHUA NATIONAL MONUMENT AND SOUTH TO DOUGLAS AND BISBEE. THE STATION MARK IS A STANDARD DISK STAMPED, PINERY 2 1973. IT IS SET IN TOP OF A 12 INCH CONCRETE MONUMENT WHICH PROJECTS 4 INCHES. IT IS 6 FEET SOUTH OF WITNESS POST AND SIGN AND 1-1/2 FEET EAST OF THE EAST RIGHT OF WAY FENCE LINE. THE CENTER LINE OF THE NEW ROAD IS NOT KNOWN AT THIS TIME. REFERENCE MARK 2 IS A STANDARD DISK STAMPED, PINERY NO 2 1935. IT IS SET IN TOP OF A 12 INCH CONCRETE MONUMENT WHICH PROJECTS 2-1/2 INCHES. IT IS 21 FEET SOUTHEAST OF WITNESS POST, 19 FEET NORTH OF THE NEW WITNESS POST AND 12 FEET WEST OF THE EAST RIGHT OF WAY FENCE LINE. REFERENCE MARK 3 IS A STANDARD DISK STAMPED, PINERY 2 NO 3 1973. IT IS SET IN TOP OF A 10 INCH CONCRETE MONUMENT WHICH PROJECTS 1 INCH. IT IS 1 FOOT EAST OF THE EAST RIGHT OF WAY FENCE LINE. REFERENCE MARK 4 IS A STANDARD DISK STAMPED, PINERY 2 NO 4 1973. IT IS SET IN TOP OF A 10 INCH CONCRETE MONUMENT WHICH PROJECTS 2-1/2 INCHES. IT IS 48 FEET NORTH OF THE CENTER LINE OF THE HIGHWAY, 1 FOOT SOUTH OF THE NORTH RIGHT OF WAY FENCE LINE AND 1 FOOT SOUTHWEST OF A BRACED STEEL FENCE POST WITH WITNESS SIGN. THE MARK IS 0.3 MILE EAST OF STATION ALONG HIGHWAY 181. HEIGHT OF LIGHT ABOVE STATION MARK 1.5 METERS.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were established by classical geodetic methods and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in August 1993. No horizontal observational check was made to the station.
  • The orthometric height was scaled from a topographic map.
  • The Laplace correction was computed from DEFLEC99 derived deflections.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
