Found this while visiting Ajo. Calibrated altimeter.

Found Reference Mark 4 while visiting the area.

Stumbled across this while stopping at the wildlife refuge visitor center.

I found this benchmark in the sidewalk at the entrance to the visitor center of the game preserve.

DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1935 (EBL) A SUPPLEMENTAL TRIANGULATION STATION PLACED AT AJO FOR LOCAL CONVENIENCE. TO REACH FROM THE AJO POST OFFICE, TAKE THE GRAVELED HIGHWAY TOWARD GILA BEND FOR 1.4 MILES TO POINT WHERE THE HIGHWAY TURNS RIGHT (NORTHEAST). THE STATION IS ABOUT 100 FEET WEST OF THE HIGHWAY, OPPOSITE THE ABOVE-MENTIONED CURVE. MARKED BY A STANDARD BRONZE DISK. REFERENCE MARK NO. 1, A STANDARD BRONZE REFERENCE DISK, IS 23.180 METERS (76.05 FEET) FROM STATION N 05 DEG 39 MIN E. REFERENCE MARK NO. 2, A STANDARD BRONZE REFERENCE DISK, IS 19.795 METERS (64.94 FEET) FROM STATION N 89 DEG 03 MIN E. THE AZIMUTH MARK, A STANDARD STATION DISK WITH AN ARROW CHISELED THEREON POINTING TOWARD THE STATION, IS SET IN A BLOCK OF CONCRETE ABOUT 0.35 MILE DOWN THE ROAD FROM THE STATION, 20 PACES EAST OF THE ROAD AND N 40 DEG 44 MIN E FROM THE STATION.

BURD, COMDG., 1ST COMPUTATIONS TECHNICAL SQUADRON, FORBES AIR FORCE BASE, TOPEKA, KANSAS, DATED 3 MARCH 1953-- STATION AND REFERENCE MARK 1 WERE FOUND IN GOOD CONDITION. REFERENCE MARK 2 WAS FOUND DESTROYED AND LYING BESIDE THE ROAD. AFTER A THOROUGH SEARCH OF THE AREA, THE AZIMUTH MARK WAS NOT RECOVERED. STATION IS LOCATED ABOUT 1.4 MI. N ALONG STATE HIGHWAY 85 TO GILA BEND FROM THE POST OFFICE IN AJO, ABOUT 107 MI. W OF TUCSON, ON THE W SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY, IN THE YARD OF THE HOME OF THE GAME WARDEN, AND ABOUT 4 FT. FROM THE N SIDE OF THE HOUSE. STATION IS A STANDARD TRIANGULATION MARKER, SET IN CONCRETE AND PROJECTS ABOUT 6 IN. TO REACH THE STATION FROM THE POST OFFICE ON THE N SIDE OF THE SQUARE IN AJO, GO W FOR 0.05 MI., TURN RIGHT ON THE MAIN STREET (SOLONA AVENUE) AND FOLLOW ALONG THIS ROAD, WHICH IS ALSO STATE HIGHWAY 85, FOR 1.4 MI. TO A HOUSE ON THE LEFT, HOME OF THE GAME WARDEN WHICH IS ON GOVERNMENT PROPERTY, AND THE STATION IS IN THE YARD ON THE N SIDE OF THE HOUSE.

RECOVERY NOTE BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1953 (EBL) FLITE 1935 MARK IS SOLID BUT CONCRETE HAS BEEN CHIPPED. RM 1 AND RM 2 NOT RECOVERED. THERE ARE SIGNIFICANT CHANGES IN THE AREA AROUND FLITE 1935. A NEW DESCRIPTION FOLLOWS-- TO REACH STATION FROM THE PLAZA IN AJO, GO 1.4 MILES, IN A NORTHERLY DIRECTION, TO THE FISH AND WILDLIFE BUILDING AND THE STATION ON THE LEFT. THE STATION MARK, A STANDARD USC AND GS TRIANGULATION DISK STAMPED FLITE 1935 IS SET IN THE TOP OF A CONCRETE MONUMENT THAT PROJECTS ABOUT 4 CENTIMETERS ABOVE THE GROUND. IT IS ABOUT 16.7 METERS SOUTH OF THE SOUTHEAST CORNER OF THE FISH AND WILDLIFE BUILDING, 15.9 METERS WEST OF THE SOUTHEAST SIDEWALK CORNER, 5.5 METERS EAST OF THE SOUTHWEST SIDEWALK CORNER AND 1.0 METER SOUTH OF A LARGE PALO VERDE TREE IN THE SIDEWALK AREA. DISTANCE AND DIRECTION FROM NEAREST TOWN--IN NORTH EDGE OF AJO.

RECOVERY NOTE BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1967 (KFB) THE STATION MARK AND REFERENCE MARK NUMBER 1 WERE RECOVERED AND FOUND IN GOOD CONDITION. THE AZIMUTH MARK AND REFERENCE MARK NUMBER 2 HAVE BEEN DESTROYED. A NEW DESCRIPTION TO REACH THE STATION FOLLOWS. TO REACH THE STATION FROM THE POST OFFICE IN AJO, GO AROUND THE SQUARE TO STATE HIGHWAY 85. TURN RIGHT AND GO NORTH ON STATE HIGHWAY 85 FOR 1.4 MILES TO THE U.S. FISH AND WILDLIFE OFFICE BUILDING ON THE LEFT AND THE STATION AS DESCRIBED ABOVE. AIRLINE DISTANCE AND DIRECTION FROM NEAREST TOWN--1.0 MILE NORTH OF AJO, 100 FEET WEST OF STATE HIGHWAY 85 AND ON THE NORTH SIDE OF THE U.S. FISH AND WILD LIFE OFFICE BUILDING.

RECOVERY NOTE BY NATIONAL GEODETIC SURVEY 1979 (CN) THE STATION WAS RECOVERED IN GOOD CONDITION. REFERENCE MARKS 1 AND 2 WERE DESTROYED BY CONSTRUCTION OF THE NEW CABEZA PRIETA GAME RESERVE HEADQUARETERS IN AJO. REFERENCE MARKS 3 AND 4 WERE ESTABLISHED AT THIS TIME. REFERENCE MARK 3 IS A STANDARD DISK STAMPED---FLITE 1935 NO 3 1979---SET IN A DRILL HOLE IN THE CONCRETE WALKWAY. REFERENCE MARK 4 IS A STANDARD DISK STAMPED---FLITE 1935 NO 4 1979---SET IN A DRILL HOLE IN THE CONCRETE WALKWAY. THE STATION MARK IS LOCATED UNDER THE PALO VERDE TREE IN FRON OF THE GAME RESERVE HEADQUARTERS.

  • The orthometric height was scaled from a topographic map.
  • The Laplace correction was computed from DEFLEC99 derived deflections.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
