Documented History (by the NGS)

01/01/1953 by CGS (MONUMENTED)
DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1953 (EBL) THE STATION AND REFERENCE MARKS 1 AND 2 WERE FOUND AS DESCRIBED. THE AZIMUTH MARK HAS BEEN DESTROYED, DUE TO CONSTRUCTION ALONG THE RAILROAD, AND 18 A 12 (GA.GEOD.S.) WAS NOT LOCATED. THE STATION MARK WAS REPLACED WITH A STANDARD U.S.C. AND G.S. DISK, AND AN UNDEGROUND MARK WAS SET. A NEW AZIMUTH MARK WAS ESTABLISHED. REFERENCE MARKS 1 AND 2 WERE FOUND IN GOOD CONDITION. A NEW ELEVATION WAS DETERMINED FOR THE SURFACE MARK. A COMPLETE NEW DESCRIPTION FOLLOWS-- THE STATION IS LOCATED IN DOUGLASVILLE, ON THE GROUNDS OF THE DOUGLAS COUNTY COURTHOUSE. IT IS 53.1 FT. N OF THE NW CORNER OF THE COURTHOUSE, 14 FT. S OF THE WALL AROUND THE N SIDE OF THE GROUND, AND ON THE EXTENDED TANGENT OF THE W WALL OF THE COURTHOUSE. IT IS A STANDARD DISK, SET IN THE TOP OF A 10-IN. ROUND CONCRETE POST PROJECTING 2 IN. IT IS STAMPED 18 A 11 1941 1953. THE ELEVATION IS 1,172.199 FT. REFERENCE MARK 1 IS 43.041 M. SW OF THE STATION, ALONG THE W WALL AROUND THE COURTHOUSE GROUNDS, AND 54 FT. N OF THE S WALL. IT IS STAMPED 18 A 11 NO 1 1941 AND IS FLUSH WITH THE GROUND. REFERENCE MARK 2 IS 20.190 M. W OF THE STATION, ALONG THE W WALL AROUND THE COURTHOUSE GROUNDS, AND 18 FT. S OF THE N WALL. IT IS STAMPED 18 A 11 NO 2 1941 AND IS FLUSH WITH THE GROUND. THE ELEVATION OF THE MARK IS 1,171.043 FT. THE AZIMUTH MARK IS ABOUT 0.5 MI. N OF THE STATION, IN A NEGRO SETTLEMENT, ON THE PROPERTY OF MRS. V. CARTEN BRIDGES. IT IS 65 FT. NE OF THE NE CORNER OF MRS. BRIDGES BRICK HOUSE, 26 FT. S OF THE CENTERLINE OF AN E-W ROAD, 34 FT. W OF A N-S T-ROAD, AND 1.5 FT. E OF A POWERLINE POLE. IT IS A STANDARD DISK, SET IN THE TOP OF A 10-IN. ROUND CONCRETE POST PROJECTING 2 IN., AND IS STAMPED 18 A 11 1941 RESET 1953. TO REACH THE AZIMUTH MARK FROM THE STATION, GO E ON U.S. HIGHWAY 78 FOR 0.2 MI. TO THE SECOND STOP LIGHT, TURN LEFT (ON DALLAS HIGHWAY) AND GO 0.5 MI. TO A SIDE ROAD LEFT, TURN LEFT AND GO 0.15 MI. TO A BRICK HOUSE AND THE AZIMUTH MARK ON THE LEFT AS DESCRIBED.

RECOVERY NOTE BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1956 (HCA) VERY EVIDENTLY, THIS IS STATION 18-A-11--F (GA.GEOD.S.), AND IT IS SUGGESTED THAT THE NAME BE CHANGED TO THAT GIVEN ABOVE OR TO 18-A-11-F (GA.GEOD.S.). THE UNDERSIGNED WAS FURNISHED PHOTOSTATS OF THE ORIGINAL LOCAL CONTROL SURVEYS DESCRIPTIONS OF BOTH MARKS. HE RECOVERED IN GOOD CONDIITON A C. AND G.S. STANDARD TRIANGULATION DISK STAMPED 18 A 11 FITTING PRECISELY IN EVERY EXTANT DETAIL THE PHOTOSTAT DESCRIPTION OF BENCH MARK DESIGNATED ON THE PHOTOSTAT AS 18A-11F. HE SEARCHED UNSUCCESSFULLY FOR 18 A 11 AND 18 A 12 IN LOCATIONS THAT OBVIOUSLY FITTED THE RESPECTIVE DESRIPTIONS. FURTHER, THE UNDERSIGNED HAS CHECKED THE PLANE COORDINATES OF THESE POINTS BY INSPECTION ON THE GROUND BY COMPARING WITH THE PLANE COORDINATES OF DOUGLASVILLE, COURTHOUSE WHICH IS NOW DESTROYED. THE DESTRUCTION OF THE COURTHOUSE BY FIRE PROMPTED A DOUGLASVILLE ENGINEER, MR. J.D. HUTCHESON, TO INFORM THE DIRECTOR USC AND GS CONCERNING THESE MARKS AND THUS SET IN MOTION THIS INVESTIGATION. THE UNDERSIGNED DESTROYED R.M. NO. 1 BECAUSE OF ITS IMPENDING DESTRUCTION IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE NEW COURTHOUSE, AND HE SEARCHED UNSUCCESSFULLY FOR THE AZIMUTH MARK. REFERENCE MARK NO. 3 WILL BE SET UPON THE COMPLETION OF THE NEW BUILDING AND ANOTHER RECOVERY NOTE WILL BE WRITTEN. JULY 1956. IT APPEARS THAT STATIONS 18A-11A, 18A-11B, ETC. THRU 18A-11F ARE PART OF A SPUR LINE WHICH TAKES OFF STATION 18A-11. IT IS DESIRED THAT YOU CONFIRM THIS DISCREPANCY IN ORDER THAT WE MAY CORRECT OUR RECORDS. IN THIS REGARD, THE UNDERSIGNED HAS NOTED IN THE PAST THAT PERSONS HAVE INSISTED IN SHOWING HIM A MARK RESEMBLING THE GEODETIC SURVEY OF GEORGIA IN EVERY DETAIL EXCEPT THAT THE EXACT CENTER WAS MARKED BY A SMALL (ESTIMATED 1/8- TO 1/4-INCH BRONZE ROD) PIECE OF METAL ROD INSTEAD OF THE USUAL STANDARD STATE SURVEYS DISK. ONE SUCH IS HAZILY RECOLLECTED AS USED AS AN AZIMUTH MARK (AFTER 30 MINUTES RESEARCH, SEE TRIANGULATION STATION NO. 7C-5 ECCENTRIC, BULLOCH COUNTY, GEORGIA.) THIS INDICATES THAT THE LETTERED DESIGNATIONS BETWEEN STATION 18 A 11 AND 18 A 12 ARE THE ACTUAL INTERMEDIATE INTRUMENT POINTS BETWEEN THE NUMERICALLY DESIGNATED (WITHOUT THE SECOND ALPHABETICAL DESIGNATION) PERMANENT DISK-MARKED POINTS. IN THE PRESENT CASE, A PERMANENT DISK WAS ADDED TO THE MARK BECAUSE IT WAS ON THE COURTHOUSE GROUNDS AND THEREFORE A LOGICAL PLACE FOR ANOTHER PERMANENT POINT.
01/01/1956 by CGS (MARK NOT FOUND)
RECOVERY NOTE BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1956 (HCA) NO EVIDENCE OF THE MARK WAS FOUND.
01/01/1958 by USGS (GOOD)
RECOVERY NOTE BY US GEOLOGICAL SURVEY 1958 STATION WAS REPORTED DESTROYED IN 1957 BY CONSTRUCTION OF NEW COURTHOUSE. HOWEVER, SINCE TEMPORARY BUILDINGS HAVE BEEN REMOVED, THIS MONUMENT HAS BEEN RECOVERED.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were established by classical geodetic methods and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in September 1997.
  • The NAVD 88 height was computed by applying the VERTCON shift value to the NGVD 29 height (displayed under SUPERSEDED SURVEY CONTROL.) The vertical order pertains to the superseded datum.
  • The Laplace correction was computed from DEFLEC99 derived deflections.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
