Out for a nice 12 mile hike today with Stantastic & MerryMary, up one side of Coal Canyon, down the other (more or less).

Mark recovered in good condition. Disc punched in braille? See picture. Clearly the correct disc (by number & location). New "To Reach" directions, logged at NGS:

LOCATED 3.75 MILES SOUTHWEST OF THE PRADO DAM IN ORANGE COUNTY, APPROX AT THE BORDER OF CLEVELAND NATIONAL FOREST, NEAR CHINO HILLS STATE PARK, ALONG THE MAIN DIVIDE ROAD.
EXIT THE 91 FREEWAY AT COAL CANYON IF ABLE. THE EXIT IS OFFICIAL USE ONLY, CONTACT CALTRANS FOR KEY, OR ACCESS THE EXIT FROM THE SANTA ANA RIVER BIKE TRAIL. PROCEED UP APPROX 2.8 MILES ALONG THE WESTERLY RIDGE ROAD ABOVE COAL CANYON TO THE MAIN DIVIDE ROAD. TURN LEFT (NORTHEAST) ON THE MAIN DIVIDE ROAD, AND PROCEED APPROX 0.35 MILES TO THE MARK ON THE RIGHT, 110 FEET SOUTHEAST OF THE CENTERLINE OF THE ROAD AND AT THE TOP OF A SMALL KNOLL. A PLAIN PIPE CAP, STAMPED C 317 AND WITH ADDITIONAL DIFFICULT TO READ POINT PUNCHED CHARACTERS, RIVETED ON THE TOP OF AN IRON PIPE.

IN ORANGE COUNTY, 2.5 MILES WEST ALONG STATE HIGHWAY 18 FROM THE ATCHISON, TOPEKA AND SANTA FE RAILWAY STOP AND SIDING AT PRADO DAM, RIVERSIDE COUNTY, THENCE 4.1 MILES SOUTH ALONG THE MAIN DIVIDE TRUCK TRAIL, 0.6 MILE EAST OF THE JUNCTION OF A ROAD LEADING SOUTHEAST, AT A CURVE AND A CUT, 110 FEET SOUTHEAST OF THE CENTERLINE OF THE TRAIL, AND AT THE TOP OF A SMALL KNOLL. A METROPOLITAN WATER DISTRICT OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA STANDARD CAP, STAMPED C 317 AND RIVETED ON THE TOP OF AN IRON PIPE. NOTE-- THIS MARK IS ALSO 4.7 MILES SOUTH AND EAST OF LASKY CAMP SERVICE STATION.

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The NAVD 88 height was computed by applying the VERTCON shift value to the NGVD 29 height (displayed under SUPERSEDED SURVEY CONTROL.) The vertical order pertains to the superseded datum.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
