Area accessed through Aera Energy oil field (changing to Linn Western in April 2007). NOT RECOMMENDED FOR THE AVERAGE BENCHMARK HUNTER. The 1966 To Reach description may still be adequate, but I came a different way. Google Earth is also a big help.

Station Mark and both RM's recovered as described.

New / Alternate To Reach description follows -
FROM THE POST OFFICE IN BREA, GO NORTH ON BREA BOULEVARD, WEST ON CENTRAL AVE, NORTH ON SITE RD TO THE GATE TO AERA / LINN OIL FIELD. CONTACT FIELD MANAGER FOR ENTRY (NAME / PHONE IN TRANSITION AT THIS TIME - SEE SIGNS AT GATE).
PROCEED NORTHERLY ON THE PAVED ROAD FOR 0.56 MI, FOLLOWING SIGNS FOR THE OFFICE. THEN TURN EASTERLY IN THE VALLEY AND FOLLOW SIGNS FOR THE BAR-B-Q AREA FOR 0.75 MI, STAYING ON THE PAVED ROAD TO THE EAST. LEAVE PAVEMENT, TURN NORTHEAST AND PASS BETWEEN THE BAR-B-Q AREA AND THE CORRALS FOR 0.2 MI TO GATE.
PASS THROUGH GATE (INQUIRE OF FIELD OFFICE FOR KEY, IF REQUIRED). CONTINUE FOR 0.05 MI TO ROAD TURNING UP HILL TO THE RIGHT. NOTE - 4 WHEEL DRIVE WITH LOW GEAR RECOMMENDED. CONTINUE UPHILL SOUTHERLY TURNING TO NORTHEASTERLY FOR 0.65 MI TO THE STATION ON THE RIGHT.

Also spotted a non-NGS OC mark on the way down the hill. See last two pics.

Interesting use of an existing older trig station (evidently not NGS) as a reference mark. An arrow?

Possibly couldn't have found it without my trusty metal detector. Worked perfectly for this mark, which was burried in dirt and surface vegetation, about 2 inches deep.

Surveyor equivalent of White-out needed? Bronze-out?
photoLong steep hill to DX4804
Glad to have a good Jeep. Low gear a must! Steeper than it looks in the picture.

  • The orthometric height was scaled from a topographic map.
  • The Laplace correction was computed from DEFLEC99 derived deflections.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
