This was a fun recovery! Didn't think I'd find it, or would have to come back with the metal detector (it's about a mile from the car). Several hiking trails intersect nearby, but in between is pretty heavy brush (typical SoCal coastal sage). Found RM 7 first, checked the datasheet for the bearing and distance to the mark, and used my hiking poles to line up the bearing (like a range in nautical terms). Got to the spot, did some probing, and - voila! - there's the mark under an inch or so of loose dirt and leaves. Woo - Hoo!

The area has changed significantly, and a new description will be compiled and submitted to the NGS database, with a copy added here later.

Submission to NGs on 5-7-2007:
STATION MARK, RM 3 AND RM 7 RECOVERED IN GOOD CONDITION. RM 6 NOT RECOVERED. REVISED PROPERTY INFORMATION AND TO REACH DIRECTIONS FOLLOW -
THE MARK IS LOCATED ALONG A RECREATION TRAIL THROUGH THE PANORAMA PARK AND NATURE PRESERVE OF THE CITY OF FULLERTON. TO REACH THE STATION FROM THE INTERSECTION OF THE ORANGE FREEWAY (STATE ROUTE 57) AND YORBA LINDA BLVD, PROCEED WEST ON YORBA LINDA BLVD ACROSS STATE COLLEGE BLVD FOR 0.6 MI TO ITS 'T' INTERSECTION WITH PIONEER AVE.
TURN RIGHT (NORTH) ON PIONEER AVE FOR 0.3 MI, PIONEER AVE BECOMING WESTERLY. TURN RIGHT (NORTH, BECOMING NORTHWESTERLY) ON LADERA VISTA DR FOR 0.5 MI TO THE PANORAMA PARK.
PACK UPHILL NORTHEAST ON THE PANORAMA RECREATION TRAIL. BEAR LEFT AT A TRAIL FORK APPROX 0.15 MI UP THE TRAIL, AND PROCEED APPROX ANOTHER 175 FEET TO THE MARK ON THE RIGHT. THE MARK WAS FOUND APPROX ONE INCH UNDER THE LEVEL OF THE DIRT TRAIL, AT THE RIGHT (SOUTHEAST) EDGE OF THE TRAIL, WITHIN ONE FOOT OF THE BRUSH.
RM 7 WAS LOCATED AS MONUMENTED IN THE BRUSHY AREA BETWEEN THE DIRT TRAIL LEADING TO THE STATION, AND A GRAVEL AND DIRT TRAIL TO THE SOUTHEAST.
RM 3 WAS LOCATED APPROX 325 FEET BACK SOUTHWEST DOWN THE TRAIL, NORTHWEST OF THE TRAIL, AND ACROSS FROM SEVERAL SIGNED GROUP RECREATION AREAS. RM 3 HAS A CARSONITE WITNESS POST APPROX 2 FEET NORTHWEST OF IT, AND IS APPROX 6 INCHES UNDER THE GENERAL GROUND LEVEL AMONGST BRUSH.
THE PREVIOUS DESCRIPTION OF RM 3 AS '28 FEET SOUTHWEST OF POLE UO 080 64' MAY REMAIN VALID, BUT COULD NOT BE VERIFIED DUE TO THE THICKNESS OF THE BRUSH AND THE STATUS OF THE AREA AS A NATURE PRESERVE. THE OTHER PREVIOUS LOCATION ASSISTS FOR RM 3 (OIL WELL, FENCE, PAVED AREA) ARE NO LONGER PRESENT. RM 3 IS ALSO DOCUMENTED AS PID DX4817.
RM 6 IS BELIEVED LOST, AS THE PREVIOUS DESCRIPTION OF '29.5 FEET NORTH OF POLE UO 079 64' (FOUND) WOULD PUT IT OVER THE EDGE OF A STEEP CLIFF.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were established by classical geodetic methods and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1996. The horizontal coordinates are valid at the epoch date displayed above. The epoch date for horizontal control is a decimal equivalence of Year/Month/Day.
  • The NAVD 88 height was computed by applying the VERTCON shift value to the NGVD 29 height (displayed under SUPERSEDED SURVEY CONTROL.) The vertical order pertains to the superseded datum.
  • The Laplace correction was computed from DEFLEC99 derived deflections.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
