Documented History (by the NGS)

01/01/1972 by NGS (MONUMENTED)
DESCRIBED BY NATIONAL GEODETIC SURVEY 1972 (JLC) THE STATION IS LOCATED ABOUT 6.5 MILES SOUTHEAST OF ROSSVILLE, 5 MILES WEST-NORTHWEST OF RINGGOLD, 3.75 MILES EAST-SOUTHEAST OF FORT OGLETHORPE, ON A RIDGE KNOWN AS BOYNTON RIDGE AND ON PROPERTY OWNED BY MRS. DENNIS DUCKETT. TRIANGULATION STATION BOYNTON 1934 COULD NOT BE BUILT OVER DUE TO ITS LOCATION IN A FENCE CORNER AND NEAR A LARGE OAK TREE. THE STATION MARK AND REFERENCE MARK 2 WERE UTILIZED AS REFERENCE MARKS FOR STATION BOYNTON 2 AND A NEW AZIMUTH MARK WAS ESTABLISHED FOR THIS STATION. A TRAVERSE TIE WAS MADE BETWEEN THE STATIONS AS NOTED ABOVE, THE DISTANCE IS REDUCED TO SEA LEVEL. TO REACH THE STATION FROM THE RINGGOLD-FORT OGLETHORPE EXIT OF INTERSTATE HIGHWAY 75, GO WEST ON STATE ROUTE 2, FROM THE UNDERPASS, FOR 0.65 MILE TO THE AZIMUTH MARK ON THE LEFT. CONTINUE WEST ON ROUTE 2 FOR 0.5 MILE TO THE BOTTOM OF A HILL AND A CROSSROAD. TURN LEFT AND GO SOUTH ON A PAVED ROAD FOR 0.25 MILE TO A CROSSROAD. TURN RIGHT AND GO WEST ON BOYNTON DRIVE FOR 2.1 MILES TO THE BOYNTON METHODIST CHURCH ON THE RIGHT. CONTINUE WEST FOR 0.45 MILE TO THE TOP OF A HILL AND A DRIVEWAY ON THE RIGHT. TURN RIGHT AND GO NORTH ON THE DRIVEWAY FOR ABOUT 100 FEET TO THE HOME OF MRS. DENNIS DUCKETT. THE STATION IS ABOUT 350 YARDS NORTH OF THE DUCKETT HOME AT THE NORTHWEST CORNER OF A CLEARED PASTURE. THE PROPERTY OWNER WILL DETERMINE THE BEST ROUTE TO REACH THE STATION FROM THEIR HOME. THE STATION MARKS ARE STANDARD DISKS STAMPED BOYNTON 2 1972. THE SURFACE DISK IS SET IN THE TOP OF A 14-INCH CYLINDRICAL CONCRETE MONUMENT WHICH IS 1 FOOT BELOW THE GROUND SURFACE. IT IS 75.5 FEET SOUTHEAST OF A METAL WITNESS POST AT THE FENCE CORNER, 71 FEET EAST OF A NORTH-SOUTH FENCE LINE AND 57 FEET SOUTH OF A EAST-WEST FENCE LINE. THE UNDERGROUND DISK IS SET IN THE TOP OF AN IRREGULAR MASS OF CONCRETE WHICH IS 38 INCHES BELOW THE GROUND SURFACE. THE 1934 STATION MARKS ARE STANDARD DISKS STAMPED BOYNTON 1934. THE SURFACE MARK IS SET IN THE TOP OF A 12-INCH SQUARE CONCRETE MONUMENT WHICH PROJECTS 1-INCH ABOVE THE GROUND SURFACE. IT IS 5.5 FEET EAST OF THE METAL WITNESS POST, 4 FEET SOUTHEAST OF A 14-INCH OAK TREE AND IS IN THE EAST-WEST FENCE LINE. THE UNDERGROUND MARK, AS STATED IN THE 1934 DESCRIPTION, IS A STANDARD DISK SET IN THE TOP OF AN IRREGULAR MASS OF CONCRETE. REFERENCE MARK 2, A STANDARD DISK STAMPED BOYNTON NO 2 1934, IS SET IN THE TOP OF A 12-INCH SQUARE CONCRETE MONUMENT WHICH PROJECTS 4 INCHES ABOVE THE GROUND SURFACE. IT IS 63 FEET SOUTH-SOUTHWEST OF THE METAL WITNESS POST AND IN THE NORTH-SOUTH FENCE LINE. THE AZIMUTH MARK, A STANDARD DISK STAMPED BOYNTON 2 1972, IS CEMENTED FLUSH IN A DRILL HOLE IN THE NORTH EDGE OF A DRAIN CULVERT HEADWALL IN THE MEDIAN STRIP OF STATE ROUTE 2. IT IS 34 FEET NORTH OF THE CENTERLINE OF THE EAST BOUND LANE, 30 FEET SOUTH OF THE CENTERLINE OF THE WEST BOUND LANE, ABOUT 3 FEET LOWER THAN THE ROAD SURFACE AND 1.5 FEET SOUTHEAST OF A METAL WITNESS POST. HEIGHT OF LIGHT ABOVE STATION MARK 26.9 METERS.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were established by classical geodetic methods and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in September 1997.
  • The NAVD 88 height was computed by applying the VERTCON shift value to the NGVD 29 height (displayed under SUPERSEDED SURVEY CONTROL.)
  • The Laplace correction was computed from DEFLEC99 derived deflections.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
