Right where they say it is supposed to be.

I'll add my name to the list. I love it when geocache hiders tell us about benchmarks. There is another mark at the SW corner of the NW curb but only the pin remains. Surveyors have identified both these benchmarks but the other one is not in the gc.com database. If it was it could be logged as found in poor condition.

Every time I drive by here (which is a few times a year), I see this bridge and think to myself that it must have a mark of some sort on it; it's just too obvious a place not to have one. But I'm always in a hurry, or I see it too late to pull off the highway. Well, today, as I made my way to Castaic, I saw the bridge and made a note to myself to be sure to check it out on the way home. Sure enough, this mark, plus three other tack-marks, are on this bridge I'd never actually checked the listings; I was just very sure, after several years of logging these things, that there would be one. What's interesting about the Description is that it doesn't tell you that the highway used to use this bridge to cross the creek! Hard to believe, perhaps, but it's been many decades, and cars were a bit slower.

A formal Recovery was submitted on 7th April, 2005. The previous recovery, by the NGS a bit over a decade ago, said that this was not suitable for satellite recovery, which I found surprising. I guess that the railing of the bridge is enough to rule it out. I'll have to remember that.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1995. WARNING-Repeat measurements at this control monument indicate possible vertical movement.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (G = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
