Found as described in good condition in top of the sidewalk on the west side of the bridge near one end. A circle of white paint surrounds the disk and a large white arrow marking on the pavement points to the disk, which looks to be fairly new marker paint.

Recovered in good condition, as described. There is no longer any sort of marker paint near this mark.

photo EZ6481 Benchmark

I wanted an easy one for my first attempt at finding and photographing benchmarks. This one had "EZ" right in the PID (plus lots of recent logs and pictures) so I knew it would be easy and it was. My Blackberry internal GPS using Blackstar software said it was 8 feet away, which isn't bad accuracy considering.

Recovered as described. GPSr coordinates were right on.

DESCRIBED BY NORTH CAROLINA GEODETIC SURVEY 1984 (ACD) STATION IS LOCATED IN SOUTHWEST DURHAM. ALONG VICKERS AVENUE , AT THE NORTH-SOUTH FREEWAY UNDERPASS, IN THE WEST SIDEWALK, AT THE SOUTH END OF BRIDGE. THE STATION IS A STANDARD NCGS DISK STAMPED---VICKERS 1984---, SET INTO A DRILLED HOLE. LOCATED 0.7 METER (2.3 FT) SOUTHWEST OF EDGE OF CURB, 0.9 METER (3.0 FT) SOUTHEAST OF SECOND BRIDGE RAIL POST FROM SOUTHWEST CORNER OF BRIDGE, 2.7 METERS (8.9 FT) EAST-NORTHEAST OF NORTHEAST CORNER OF SOUTHWEST CONCRETE BRIDGE COLUMN, AND 4.6 METERS (15.0 FT) NORTHEAST OF POINT OF CURB AT SOUTHWEST END OF BRIDGE. MARK IS LEVEL WITH HIGHWAY.

Control Text

  • The North Carolina/South Carolina HARNS have been completed but, due to contractual restrictions, coordinates for these stations will NOT be published in the near future. In the interim, the published coordinates in North and South Carolina will not be consistent with the Continuously Operating Reference Stations (CORS). The HARN coordinates for these stations are available upon request. Contact Gary Thompson(919-733-3836), or Lewis Lapine(803-896-7700). In addition, the published North and South Carolina positions (NAD 83 (1986)) are NOT consistent with those determined in adjacent state readjustments. The discontinuity between stations located in North or South Carolina and those in adjacent states which have been adjusted to the HARN may be as much as 5 decimeters. This will result in a significant loss of accuracy over lines crossing such state borders.
  • The horizontal coordinates were established by classical geodetic methods and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in March 1992.
  • The NAVD 88 height was computed by applying the VERTCON shift value to the NGVD 29 height (displayed under SUPERSEDED SURVEY CONTROL.)
  • The Laplace correction was computed from DEFLEC99 derived deflections.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
