Recovered as described. Stamped 3501.

17 August 2003, Recovered in good condition, as described by Coast and Geodetic Survey 1950.
We looked for this Benchmark many months ago and determined from the location description that it was directly under a big pile of dirt and debris during the Hamilton County Courthouse exterior renovation. We checked again a couple weeks ago after the Courthouse grounds had been cleaned up and found the Benchmark in its proper location.
We returned today to get photos and log this FC1182 find. We also logged the FC1183 Benchmark nearby at the corner of 7th Street and Georgia Avenue, which is noted as 'not found' by the 1983 National Geodetic Survey.

The benchmark disk is more than a little worse for wear from the construction debris of the recent Courthouse exterior renovation, but the Designation No. 3501 is still clearly readable.

This is the view from across Georgia Avenue, looking northwest at the east entrance of the Hamilton County Courthouse. The Benchmark, and Chip's map 330, are located directly in front of the clump of low green shrubs just above the wall next to the sidewalk. Blair is checking the description for the next Benchmark!

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (g = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
