While the recovery description indicates the underground mark (original station) may well exist the surface mark does not..............FC1178 is the disk on the surface

While visiting the mountain to cache and ruby falls, we found a lot of benchmarks. It was a great day out.

Found this one on my first Benchmark hunt but thought it was FC1178 AZ based on the FC1178 log.

There seems to be a problem with the wording on this (FC1496) and another nearby mark. This mark is the Azimuth mark(FC1496) which as you can see in the picture it states (Picture of disc attached). The other nearby mark (FC1178)that folks are logging for this one is actually a Triangulation Station (FC1178)which is written on that disc(FC1178).
It even says in the description of this disc of where it is and that is was reset here!
Anyway, it is right here and in good shape...

Not as described and presumed lost. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but the original FC1496 was designated CHATTANOOGA and received in the home office in 8-11-1947 to be replaced by FC1178 CHATTANOOGA RESET 1946. I'm thinking that FC1178 is the official find, not FC1498 and have corrected my log. I await the onslaught.

Under a little puddle...but still there!

Not too tough, but disk is slightly below grade and will be puddled with water on wet days (like today).

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were established by classical geodetic methods and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in April 1999.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991.
  • The Laplace correction was computed from DEFLEC99 derived deflections.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (g = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
