Located on the back loading dock of the old US Post Office, this survey disc is in an area fenced and guarded 24/7. The law enforcement staff manning the entrance to the federal court know of the benchmark and hobby, and workload permitting, seem to be happy to escort us back for a photo of the marker.

Out doing a little benchmarking with BasicPoke and grabbed this one. We requested permission for access to the marker and was escorted by a US Marshall. She knew the location of the marker and was very accommodating.

The US Marshall who escorted me to the marker was very nice. He knew right where it was and had no issue with taking me back there. He said the last time he had someone ask about the benchmark was about three years ago, and that was a mother and her son looking for boy scouts.

The marker was found as described and in good condition.

The old Main Post Office is now the Judge Isaac Parker Federal Building. Found in center of loading dock, after moving a smoker (don't know what kind of party they were having). Had to be escorted by US Marshalls, who were very interested in finding it also.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (G = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
